THE ECO BOTAN ARTISAN KABUKI BRUSH HAS ARRIVED

Say hello to the most luxurious Everyday Minerals brush yet!!

Today we’re launching the newest brush in our Artisan Collection, the Eco Botan Artisan Kabuki Brush :)

TEBA_IMG_5945_artisan_kabuki_d-f

I’ve always been fascinated by kabuki brushes, which is why I always get SO excited creating new versions of these brushes that are 100% cruelty free (meaning the bristles are made from the super softest synthetic fibers EVER and NEVER from animal hairs) with bamboo handles.

The Eco Botan Artisan Kabuki Brush is the newest Everyday Minerals brush to add to your collection... and trust me, you’re going to LOVE it!!

The brush is really large with dense bristles, and is 100% eco friendly - of course ;)

It's base is a whopping 1 3/4 " wide.  The Bristles are 2 1/4" wide; and the entire brush is 2 3/4 " base to tip!

I highlighted four of my favorite EM brushes in the New Product Preview that posted last week, but the reason why this brush is so different and special is the shortened handle. Application is made super easy and the brush is ideal for travel!

Just like all of our brushes, the Eco Botan Artisan Kabuki Brush is ideal for both professional makeup artists and every woman alike! Its extreme versatility (use it to apply a wide range of mineral makeup, from blush to pressed powder and bronzer) is one of my favorite things about this magical tool.

When creating this brush, I did extensive research on the history of kabuki brushes... it’s so interesting to me!

If you’re unfamiliar with this beauty tool, the kabuki brush was first used in Japanese kabuki theatre, due to the heavy, thick makeup that was worn. The end result is a creamy, flawless finish, and the brush necessary to apply this makeup is now widely used among women worldwide since the 1950’s.

Remember, when using a kabuki brush, you only need a little mineral makeup - a little goes a LONG way, especially when it comes to Everyday Minerals :)

Don’t miss out on this one, it’s Limited Edition, makes a great holiday gift, and won’t last long! Enjoy!

FUN TASK:
If you could star in your very own original kabuki theatre performance, what story would your on-stage performance tell? Get creative - I’d love to hear every dramatic detail, from characters to costumes and of course, makeup!!

I’ll send the Eco Botan Artisan Kabuki Brush to a bunch of my favorites!! :)

Youth Blossoming
written by Minute, December 06, 2010
My story would be about a young girl beginning to explore the world.

I would start with a white base on my face representing the girl's innocence and blank canvas.

As the story unfolds, each part will showcase the girl's experiences and add a touch of colour to the face.

The first visit to the sea will be represented by blue and green eyeshadows.
The first trip alone will be accompanied by a touch of blush representing the excitement and wonder of experiencing independence.
The first kiss will be represented by a hint of pink lipgloss.
The first act of kindness will be represented by a brush of finishing powder, softening the facial features.

When the story ends, the look will be completed illustrating that life, through its ups and downs, leave a mark on us. What we can do is to embrace life and treasure the moments.
makeup as a rite and colours meaning
written by alafair, December 06, 2010
Wow! Every week a new surprise! This brush looks wonderful!! EDM brushes are my favorite!! They are very soft on the face and on the eyes and cruelty free.

My knowledge of kabuki theater is poor, but I am fascinated by the pictorial combination of colours made by the stage and the actors make-up and clothes. In my opinion, the most fascinating aspect is that the preparation of an actor for the scene is a rite and make-up colours are meaningful. Each actor applies his own makeup, with the process of applying makeup allowing the actor to get to know the character he plays (the make-up style depend on the character). I discovered that, first, the actor applies oils and waxes on his face to help the makeup stick to the skin. Then a thick coat of white makeup called oshiroi is put on to cover the whole face. The oshiroi is made of rice powder, and different shades of white are used depending on the age, class, and gender of the character. On this white face, red and black lines are used to outline the eyes and mouth, which are also shaped differently for male and female characters. There is a special style of makeup called kumadori. Kumadori is made up of dramatic lines and shapes applied in different colors, each representing different qualities. The most commonly used colors are dark red, which represents anger, passion, or cruelty, and dark blue, which represents sadness or depression. Other common colors are pink, representing youth or cheerfulness; light blue or green, representing calm; purple for nobility; brown for selfishness; and black for fear. There are about a hundred different mask-like styles of kumadori makeup.

I think my make-up would be pink (youth and cheerfulness):

I would use Ivory Intensive or the Bundled Up matte eyeshadow as white base:

Wet Black eyeliner and Bed Time Stories and Tide pool matte eyeshadows:

And Super Smoocher Lippie applied with a lip brush:

This would be my kimono (red!!!):

Kabuki theater is tragic and usually the story ends in the death of a character. Probably I would be a tragic heroine or I could perform a new kabuki theatre, a happy ending one. ;-) (but happy ending stories are less intense).

PS It’s not pertinent to the task, but look at this amazing kabuki sushi!!!

It’s the perfect reproduction of a kabuki makeup!!

Detective
written by jojo2739, December 06, 2010
As far as I can remember, the kabuki theatre only allows male to act on stage. If women are allowed, I would love to take the role as a detective in my story.

The story is about a detective who found herself got involve in a mysterious crime scene and been critized as murder by one of victim's friends due to an argument they had the day before - the victim got a little drunk on the same day and found dead the next day without any obvious external injuries. However, because she has evidence of absence she was set free by the police and she'll need to use her special power - the ability to talk with animal and plants - to search clues and evidences for the real murderer, a close friend of the detective who is very smart and also has alibi for her abscence on the night of murder. The murderer killed the victim with an unknown poison that cause the inner tissue to fail and cannot be detected by anyone. The detective needs to find out the relationship between the two and the cause of crime.

For the makeup, I'm thinking of a mix of purple (Art Gril, to represent mystery), silver (Passion Passport as silver bullet, to resolve crime), pink (Prettier In Pink, represent innonence of the girl) and red (Her Majesty's Secret Service, secret ability).

The costume will be a vibrant colour like this (in case it has to be kimono, though I would prefer more modern clothing.)
the first love.
written by jessicawarrick, December 07, 2010
My story would start out with the white face and slowly i would add color and texture to represent the budding of a new love. starting with a beautiful blue eye and moving on to pink rosy cheeks form the flush you get when you see your love and then down to the super smoocher lippie lips to represent the redness you get when you kiss for so long your lips go numb like you do with your first love. I would tell a story with the application of the color and textures representing each stage of love blooming.
Kabuki
written by organically_, December 08, 2010
I would do a play similar to Cinderella... where of course I would be Cinderella. I would wear a green and brown theme while the step sisters would have extravagant dresses in pink and purple. I would like to keep a traditional appeal to the costumes and makeup but would incorporate for me: cypress, ado to you, dreaming dandy, postcards eyeliner, back to school, super smoocher, champagne, kaolin powder fair and golden fair. For the sisters I would use: light pink, black eyeliner, dark brown brow color, bedtime story, tide pool, art girl, rock anthem, blushing park, game show, and wild vines.

Thanks Carina, This is the most luxurious Kabuki brush I've ever seen! It's a Truly Must-Have and, as a limited edition, we must take it soon!

I love so much Japanese culture because I think is truly fascinating.
About Kabuki theatre, the word is rendered in three ideograms, with this meaning
(KA) Song (BU) Dance (KI) Skill

This art form was created by a female shrine attendant in the 17th century, and It's strangely ironic that Women were banned from performing (because The performers were also prostitutes and male audiences often got out of control).
But in the early years, both men and women acted in kabuki plays also if the restriction in part survived to the present day: Several male kabuki actors are therefore specialists in playing female roles (onnagata).
Traditional kabuki is highly melodramatic but strictly historical.

THE STORY
We are in the Kamakura Period (about 1185 - 1333 d.C., the Medieval Period in Japan)
It's the period where land is ruled by Shōgun (the equivalent of a general, the higher-level official in the army and often was also the degree of the Prince or the Emperor) and their Samurai.

The story is about the Tragic Love of Princess Sakura (the only daughter of the Emperor and Shōgun Yoshimoto) and the Samurai, Yuichiro Mimura.

Sakura is the purest Beauty of all the reign. Her grace is only comparable to the Cherry blossom that gave her name: Sakura (is the Japanese Cherry Tree).
For Sakura I imagined a young girl, that walks with grace, like a dancer on the stage.
Her costume is a lovely Pink and White Kimono and She take with her on the stage a fan or a parasol with flowers decors.
About her makeup her skin has to be pale, smooth and velvet, with rosy cheeks, pink and white eyeshadow and eyeliner.

http://www.mywestcoastwedding.com/files/cherry blossom fan.jpg]

For Yuichiro I thought about 2 different outfits.
When he's in the palace of the Emperor he has a male kimono and takes always with him a beautiful sword with lots of decorations on the handle.
The Battle outfits has a wonderful armor in perfect Japanese style.

During the story we will see how their love story goes on.
But there's something that will divide them: The War.
Yuichiro has to take part to a Battle against a foreign population who wants to enslave the Empire.
The moment of the departure is so Sad. Yuchiro promises that he will come back safe to ask to the Shogun the hand of his daughter.
Before leaving he gets a tattoo (as many Samurai did as tradition), and he chooses a cherry blossom flowers, to symbolize that his heart will always belong to Sakura.
Years pass, The Princess suffers the distance from her sweetheart.
Also her appearence is changed, because the years of suffering dig deep within us.

Now Dominant Colours are Black and White, dark shades on the makeup, dark lipstick and lots of eyeliner.

But her sufference has no end.
When War is almost finished and the enemies are kicked out from the land, Yuichiro comes back but he's not alive. He's almost dead.
His body is terribly hurted, and there's nothing to do for him.
So Sakura goes to the temple and prays with all her heart the Goddess Amaterasu (literally "Great goddess who shines in the heavens").
She wants to sacrifice her life to save Yuichiro. And her prayers are answered.
Yuchiro incredibly heals soon but the servants told him the Princess disappearend and no one found her yet.
Just recovered his strength, Yuchiro asks to see the place where Princess had been seen for the last time.
And here he discovers something incredible.
Among lots of beautiful pink cherry blossom trees there's a "Tai Haku", a white cherry blossom tree. Something never seen before, only in paintings.
And Yuchiro understands.

In the last scene we see the funeral of Yuchiro.
After Many glorious year passed, Yuichiro became Shogun, his reign was full of prosperity, when death came he ask to be buried under the Tai Haku, and rest forever with his only love.

The Dilemma
written by LauraMc, December 09, 2010
I would do a “Bridget Jones Diary” type story. I would name it “The Dilemma.” It would be a love triangle with an average looking, but not so average women at the center. There would be the bad boy who leads her on for some fun and there would be the not as exciting (however, true and good) guy would want to pursue her, however is unsure that she would ever love him. In the end, the bad boy would die tragically, leaving the good boy to console and win completely the heart of the heroine.

Make Up must be dramatic:

White base such as “Floating Feathers” or “Bundled Up”
Beautiful blue such as “Anna Karenina”
Stunning violets such as “Mystic Night” and “Weeping Willow”
The perfect fuchsia is “Wish You Were Here”
"Black Eyeliner" is a must!
“Super Smoocher” for lips

Thanks! This was fun!
The Christmas Story
written by bverma, December 09, 2010
Since I love Christmas and it’s Christmas season, I would love to star in an original kabuki theatre performance of the Christmas story. I lived in South America for a year and I bought a beautiful handmade wooden nativity set from a market. I love it because all the characters are in traditional native Andean clothing.

I would love to see this beautiful story turned into a kabuki theatre performance and see a Japanese flavor added. While Mary and Joseph’s make-up would be stunning, the Angel and the Wise Men’s make-up could be elaborate and striking.

For the white face Floating Feathers would be used for the angel and Bundled Up for the humans. For Mary and
Joseph’s cheeks I’d choose a bright matte blush such as Apple or Game Show. I’d chose a sheen blush such as Corner Office, DVR Saturday, or Sprung for the Wise men and a shimmer blush such as B&B or New Shoes for the Angel.

For eye shadows I’d chose for:
The Angel – Volcano Blossom, Ado to You, Oasis, Little Black Dress
The Wise Men - Volcano Blossom, Little Black Dress, Mystic Night, Art Girl, Anna Karenina, Wish You Were Here, Rock Anthem, Starry Eyed
Mary – Bubble Tea, Room Addition, Starlit. Lip Lock, Weeping Willow
Joseph – Movie Night, Bird House, Driftwood, Wild Flowers, Everlasting Love, Black Eyeliner

Love your brushes Carina! They are the absolute best brushes you can get. I can’t wait to use this new kabuki.

what a stunning kabuki brush, the dimensions made me want to grab it and just try it, already knowing how gogeously soft it would be, thats what makes it such a must have brush.

KABUKI THEATRE

STAGE

It will have dramatic background scenery, at the start of the story we have the streets,

Then in contrast we have a beautiful scenery.

The music would be played by people on the stage.

COSTUMES/JEWELLRY

There are going to be period drama clothes, the long flowing dresses, elegant, it has a romantic feel to it and is perfect for the this kabuki theatre.

We would have the girl disguised in a men clothes.

Then we have her stunning costumes, the ballet tutu, the men dresses similar ot darcy, the women in elegant frocks, with dramatic colors, which capture in the audience into the beauty.

There would be vintage jewellery to go with the costumes.

STORY OUTLINE

it is a tale of young lady who has has grown up on the streets, penniless and lonely, a secret passion for ballet, belittled by spiteful people who show her no compassion, dresses as a tomboy to protect herself and her only friend is a stray dog that she falls in love with.

The young lady is lookings for scraps of food when she finds a ancient trinket box,

she enticed by its beauty, slowly she opens it and like a magical puff of chamagne lucent, she suddenly finds herself surrounded by stunning beauty.

This is where she meets a kind old lady who shows her the kindness in people, she introudced to the most beautiful makeup, she is shown how to apply makeup, she is given a pair of beautiful ballerina shoes,

she meets a handsome man who teaches her ballet and also to laugh, and builds her confidence, she has never felt like this having been ignored by men.

There will be lots of music, dramatic performances, dancing including a ballet performance full of romance.

As dramatically as she finds herself in this magical place she is back to the streets, and thinks she has just imagined it.

It is when she sees the trinket box next to her she picks it up and hesistates but then opens it and finds the ballerina shoes and she simply smiles.

Its a story of finding yourself no matter who you are, it is about believing in yourself, this is a girl who has had it hardship but shows you can still have passion, desire and there are people who do have kindness and show you that you are just as important as other people no matter what your status is in society.

MAKEUP/HAIR

The hair would be blunt short hair and the start of the story and when she is in a magical surrounding her hair would be long and flowing, during the performance her hair would be wavy, in a bun. When she is performing i woud wet sand in her hair to glisten and provide a lovely effect.

It is interesting how in kabuki theatre they have different colors signifying emotions so i have integrated in this into the play.

The characters who she meets who treat her like she is not worth anything, they would have dramatic deep red makeup (beni) which would show their emotions of anger. i would use bundled up all over the face and then new shoes blush, as strong lines around the face. They would also have purple (murasaki) which illustrates their nobility, loftiness. For this i would use mystic night and monsoon, because they are dramatic colors.

At the start of the story she is filled with fear, rejected so to show this we would use black dramatic eyemakeup and brown to show this emotion. I would black smokey eyeliner, and dark brown brow color.

Then we have red which shows her eagerness, passion when she is in this place demonstrated through her dancing. I would use corner office blush on her cheeks.

In the ballet she would have pink (usuaka) to show her youthfulness, cheerfulness. I would choose liplock on the eyes, and mall punk in the crease and for the cheeks i would use sprung.

The kind woman she meets would have bubble tea eyeshadow because light blue (asagi) shows coolness and calm.

The ladies who dance with her in the ballet will have light green eyeshadow (midori) to show tranquillity. I would choose leap and bounds for the eyshadow.

The makeup would be applied both wet and dry because it would be both subtle and dramatic.

If I could star in my very own original kabuki theatre performance, I'd tell a Romeo & Juliet-like story set in Japan. The costumes would be stunning -- I'd enlist the help of my favorite designers to create the looks. For makeup I would keep my Juliet character in a simple natural lip & champagne eyeshadow for most of the play, and play up the drama with a brown smoky eye and red lips for the ball scene.
I would want to play the fairy godmother - my makeup would focus on the eyes to create an eye-twinkiing effect & pretty pink lipstick.
