TAYLOR'S WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

TWE_tayamp
As a stylist, I find myself constantly surrounded by clothing and accessories, whether I am on a shoot, at a designer's showroom, or at home picking out my outfit for the day.

Seasons come and go, trends rise and fall - but there is something to be said for those pieces that you can wear year after year. This is my guide for the essential items that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

I figured I would begin my "essentials" guide by snapping a few photos of these items from my own closet, and then suggesting the best ways that you can get the look right now. So buckle up and get ready for a fashionable ride!

The Little Black Dress

There is nothing more classic or versatile than a great little black cocktail dress.

TWE_miumiu

This is one of favorite little numbers, a flirty Miu Miu dress that I always turn to when I feel like I have nothing to wear.

I found this vintage dress at The Way We Wore, the embroidered details are magical and I love the dimension of the sleeves.

TWE_vintageLBD

Investing in a perfectly tailored, chic and slightly sexy LBD is so essential to any closet. Trust me, once you find "the one," you'll be set for everything from a first date to an office cocktail party to a night of drinks and dancing.

Right now, I'm really feeling:

1. Diane von Furstenberg's Stitches Dress
2. Gold Hawk's Drawstring Mini Dress
3. Mason by Michelle Mason's Asymmetrical Dress with Metal Trim
4. Bailey 44's Beginners Lucky Dress

TWE_LBD

The Quintessential Blazer

When I want to add some polish to my "ladies who lunch with an edge" personal style, I throw on my go-to black Chanel blazer.

TWE_chanelblazer

This translates perfectly from day to night - start with a pair of shredded denim with a loose white tank during the day, then throw on a slinky cocktail dress and roll up the sleeves once the sun sets.

After scouring my favorite online shopping destinations, these are my fave blazers of the minute:

1. ASOS' Boyfriend Blazer
2. Forever 21's Shoulder Studette Blazer
3. Balmain's Cotton Canvas Studded Military Blazer
4. Elizabeth and James' Blade Runner Jacket

TWE_blazer

The Classic Black Pump

Every girl needs that classic black pump with a leg-lengthening silhouette - my personal favorite is Casadei's platform pump. A beautiful pair that is always in style.

TWE_casadei1
TWE_casadei2

If you've been on the quest for the ideal lack pump, check out my picks below for some savage suggestions.

1. Aldo's Destime Pump
2. L.A.M.B.'s Zena Lug Pump
3. Yves Saint Laurent's Eelskin Pump
4. Nine West's Rocha Pump

TWE_heels

The Metallic Bag

Let's add some sparkle into the as-of-now monochromatic mix! I have been salivating over my Chanel metallic 2.55 bags more than usual lately, and I think that every girl needs a metallic bag to add an extra dash of sparkle to any outfit.

TWE_chanel2.55

I've discovered two scrumptious options for you... both of these options are simply beautiful - and definitely more wallet-friendly! - alternatives.

1. Forever 21's Basket Weave Purse
2. DKNY's Fold-Over Metallic Leather Clutch

TWE_bags

The Neutral Flat

I recently found a perfect pair of flats in Saks Fifth Avenue Private Label's basic yet beautiful (and quite affordable at $165) ballet flat. While I usually wear my Lanvin flats, these are a fun alternative.

They key here is finding a flat in a neutral shade that will work with pretty much every color you may build an outfit around.

TWE_saksflat

I also really like:

1. Lanvin's Linen and Leather Ballerina Flat
2. Steve Madden's Tama Leopard Flat
3. Coye Nokes' Amelia Flat

TWE_flats

The Motorcycle Jacket

There's a difference between a leather jacket and a leather motorcycle jacket. One is predictable, and the other adds a kick to even the sweetest of looks. A great motorcycle jacket is a true investment as it is a timeless way to toughen up a floral frock or jeans and a tee.

Try topping a gown with one of these bad boys at your next big event and watch the compliments roll in (just make sure the event isn't black tie!)

I switch it up between this great Juicy jacket I found a few seasons ago and a studded Robins biker jacket I just got.

juicyjacket

Love the studded detail on this guy.

TWE_robins

Here are latest biker jackets that I'm drooling over:

1. Vince's Asymmetrical Leather Jacket
2. Forever 21's Cropped Faux Leather Jacket
3. Rick Owens' Metallic Lambskin Biker Jacket

TWE_biker

The Platform Bootie

I have given my Christian Louboutin suede booties so much wear since I got them, in large part because of the great grey shade. Grey goes with black, brown, tan... pretty much everything and anything.

A grey suede ankle boot is a great investment, as grey works year round with every season.

TWE_louboutin1
TWE_louboutin2

I've found strikingly similar options in the following two pairs:

1. Dolce Vita's Vita Draped Suede Booties with Open Toe
2. Steve Madden's Cassiee Bootie

Your Signature Perfume

As you know if you read my first blog, I am obsessed with Ebba's Miss Marisa perfume - this distinctly different yet intriguing scent is perfection.

If you don't have a signature scent yet, I'd suggest that you give Miss Marisa a spin!

TWE_marisa

Androgyny
written by rca, February 08, 2010
Definitely the blazers i find at forever 21 are some of the fashion loves of my life. I can never find a men's blazer that fits my body and because i have a short torso, i've found that women's blazers complement my body so much better.

The best part about their blazers are the androgyny behind them. I love it when I can wear an edgy shirt with a more feminine jacket. It balances out the outfit and it does wonders for my self-esteem. I can't tell you how many times I've put outfits together with the blazers, paired it with a great v-neck, and walked the streets with a confident umph in my steps. smilies/cheesy.gif

The funny thing is, I've found myself superstitious with my blazers. I've worn a blazer every day I've had a test and I swear I do so much better. I think the blazer makes me feel so good that at the end of the day, regardless of the grade, I know I've done my best and I felt good doing so!

My favorite outfit is pairing a black v-neck or black collar button up (the men's equivalent to a LBD) with a pair of Levi's slim straight jeans with a pair of vibrant converses, topped off with my raybans (the fashion love of my life) and I'm good to go.

Was wondering what your favorite shoe brands were and what you look for in shoes! smilies/cheesy.gif

Glad to see you blogging! Your black pumps and metallic Chanels are amazing! My go-to is my black corduroy blazer. It just seems to go with everything. I also love silver hoops.

Miss Taylor! My one "go to" item in my closet would have to be my super skinny white jeans with "train conductor" detail. Dressed up or down, with a great heel or flat these jeans always do the trick! Especially love this look with an oversized black tank top and great black heel - you'll look like no one around! Also, I just wanted to thank you for becoming a part of something so great. I love that you expose yourself and allow us as readers to interact with you in an industry that is almost invisible to the rest of us. You make me look forward to every Tuesday. Can't wait to see what you are involved in next, God Bless you, pretty lady!

PS. I "tweeted" you earlier this week .... I bought a sample of Miss Marisa & have fallen in loveeeee. I would LOVE to have more of it in my life! xx

First of all, I LOVE your blog! I saw it on your Tweets, and I had to get myself here asap, because you were my fav on Rachel Zoe Project!
My to-go all time fav piece in my closet has to be this simple, beige flow-y t-shirt looking blouse which goes with EVERYTHING. I wear it with jeans for the casual look, and tuck it into skirts for a dressier look..and the funny thing is, it's my sister's! She let me have it for a little while and I fell in love. She bought it in Korea when she went for a visit last summer, and it didn't cost more than 20 bucks! And since it has the loose look, I can eat all I want at a dinner out, and my gut won't show. Haha. I love it.
Can't wait for your next post where you show more of your closet!

My go-to, essential piece would have to be my pair of jeans. I can dress casual with a t-shirt, or doll up a bit with a pretty top and all matching accessories.
LB jacket!
written by plushpez, February 09, 2010
I love my little black fine wale Corduroy jacket/blazer. I have the hardest time finding fitted jackets since I have broad shoulders, a small waist and small chest. I hate to search for jacket or jeans because only 1 in a mllion will fit. but this jacket fits like a glove, the fabric is supple so I don't look bulky, but with texture. Its warm enough to serve as a jacket in the spring and fall, and in between I'll wear it indoors with jeans or a slinky dress!

I LOVE my black boots. They can make my rattiest jeans look sharp and edge out any dress pants. I like that "bad girl" look. I find myself standing taller, straighter, and with confidence when I wear mine.
My go to piece
written by Dixie82, February 09, 2010
Nice tips Taylor! I love those boots!!!!

My got to essential piece in my closet right now is my black high waist pencil skirt - brand name unknown -but I love that little skirt, it goes with boots, pumps, any top you choose, as well as any sweater or blazer on top, just pick an occasion and the pencil skirt will work!!! I go to work in the morning and if I am meeting a friend for a cocktail in town after work just spice it up a bit with accessories and here I am in the night out in the town outfit to kill for!!!

if I wasn't at work right now I would take the acutal picture but google will do!
mine looks something like this:

Either one of my two mini bandeau jersey skirts in black and grey. Simple, pretty, and they go with so much. (I have an unlimited supply of more interesting and colourful stockings, for instance)
Purple Suede
written by Allywan, February 09, 2010
My go to item right now is this purple suede zipper clutch I got from JJ WInters. Since I've been wearing a ton of black, gray, and white, the clutch really pops . Also it just makes me happy. You've gotta love that piece that always makes you smile when you wear it. That and that fact I haven't seen anyone else here with one. I love having things you don't see on every other person.

My go to piece, in my closet, is my scarf. It's a lovely scarf in bright red. I wear that scarf with so many outfits. I think it's a great way to grab attention, in a regular black sweater, a t-shirt and jeans, a dress, a jacket. It always makes me feel so beautiful.

Oh man, picking one favorite item is like choosing my favorite child - I don't know if I can do it. Howevs, if someone tied me up and either forced me to eat a liverwurst sandwich or choose my favorite thing, it would probably be my black tux jacket. Or my white tux jacket. Let's just say a tuxedo jacket...

Loves wearing it with jeans, boots, a tee and some bling, or over a sequin and chiffon shell and skinny grey pinstriped pants.

But then there's always my vintage silver brocade jacket I scored for three bucks at an estate sale, or my olive military jacket, or my slouchy grey boots....

Tuxedo jacket! I'm going with the tuxedo jacket! Great to read about your own wardrobe essentials, and I can't WAIT to get my Miss Marisa pack.....Kidding! I'm kidding. Sort of...

My favorite item in my closet is my over-the-knee Kimchi Blue boots. I found them at Urban Outfitters and they are simply amazing. I like to wear them with skinny jeans, a loose white tank top from american apparel, and a blazer. I get compliments where ever I go.

I must admit: tees win my heart! I love every kind of t-shirt, the more stupid and/or colourfull are, the more I like them! I have milions of them but I can't have enough smilies/grin.gif
I wear them with everything, jeans, skirts, miniskirts, under hoodies or blazers, in every season!
They are too cute and confortable to resist! Also, I think that they give you the possibility to express yourself and your personality, and let you play with images, tests etc. With t-shirt you can ber really original, and, also, you can design them yourself to be unique!

My favorite item is pretty boring, but I couldn't survive with-out it. I live in my Alternative Apparel burnout tee. It is the perfect weight and softness and is a great layering piece.
I bling in my white tee, serve feigns in my white tee
written by Renee M, February 09, 2010
Sticking to the 'essentials' is the most basic piece of clothing- the white tee! Because of its high importance it can't be just any white T, I love the ones by Alexander Wang and KAIN-they're a lil longer w/ detail and a V or scoop neck. Go casual with the skinny jeans and Chucks or any type shoe/heal , tuck it in a skirt, class it up in the blazer, wear with legging to show off some rockin boots, and of course ditch the pants and go straight into some sweats!

Handmade Gold Indian Ballet Flats.
written by meepocow, February 09, 2010
Love your picks, Taylor! Those pumps are to die for!

There are a lot of lovely things that money can buy, but one thing I'm convinced that money can't buy is a perfectly worn-in pair of flats. There's simply no describing that perfect pair that's been molded and shaped in all the right places to make it your own. I only have a few select pairs that have made it to this stage, and they're worth their weight in gold; I wear them day in day out, from spring through fall, with bare feet, stockings, and leggings. They can take you from a casual weekend trip to Kensington Market hunting for vintage clothing and handmade cheeses to a night on the town when heels seem too cliché. I'm a girl who loves her flats!

My favourite pair by far was purchased last summer in Toronto's Indian District. I love going to the District to buy garam masala and henna dye, and I usually end up picking up a few extra goodies along the way. I found these gorgeous handmade gold flats and couldn't pass them up! For $20, they were a steal.

The flats are made of the most gorgeous gold leather, and are crafted by hand in India. I love that you can see all the hand stitching in the finished product! The gold is accented by gorgeous taupe openwork, and the sole is padded to make the flats amazingly comfortable to wear. I especially love how the flats are cut at the sides in traditional Indian style, as it exposes just enough of the side of your foot to make them stand out from the ordinary.

I especially love the red leather sole, another traditional Indian feature. Since the sole is leather and not rubber, the shoes are incredibly flexible; combined with the gold colour, they can take me from day to night as if I'm in my favourite slippers! =)

My favourite thing about this pair of flats is knowing that I may be the only one in a room with that exact pair of shoes. I've been stopped so many times on the street with people asking me where I bought them; I love shrugging my shoulder, putting up my hands helplessly, and saying, "a little shop in the Indian District."

My Go To's
written by JHamett, February 09, 2010
All of the items you listed are in my closet and definitely amongst my go to, most worn pieces. However, there are two more items that frequent my day to day, that work anywhere, and that I absolutely would die without.
https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=623a6b963f&view=att&th=126b3d8f76ba2df9&attid=0.1&disp=inline&zw/img]

The grey sweatshirt boyfriend blazer: I fell in love the first time I saw this blazer. It's the classic boyfriend but with a twist. It is made out of grey sweatshirt material! It sooo comfy and goes with everything. Whether I'm going to class in denim and a v-neck or if I'm going out in a black outfit that needs some contrast. This works for every occasion and is slightly less dressy looking than the other black boyfriend blazers that inhabit my closet.

The oversized black cardi- I love love love oversized EVERYTHING. I throw on this cardigan all the time. I like to snuggle up and hide in it when I'm going out and it pairs amazing with denim or leggings. It looks great with stilettos or flat over the knee boots and It really gives me the slouchy NYC street style that I love.

Go to Item- Black Jeans
written by yslee, February 09, 2010
My go to item in my closet is my black jeans. I prefer J Brand 10 in. skinnies, but there are tons of different styles and at all price points so everyone can afford a pair!

I wear them with heels and a cute top for going out, or roll them up and wear with a burn-out shirt and sandals, and even to work with a button-down, blazer and pumps. They are also great to tuck into boots... the possibilities are endless! Casual, dress-up, dess-down, and sexy.

I love all of your tips Taylor!  So helpful for a girl like me who doesn’t really have that great of a fashion sense!  Would you believe I don’t even have a pair of black pumps?  Those pictures make me drool though!  Being 5’8” and having a S.O. who is shorter than me already, I try not to tower over him any more than I have to!  Plus with the stiletto heel, I would probably wipe out….which would be so embarrassing! lol I’d love to be able to wear them though.  They are just so gorgeous!  I may just have to get a pair anyway…you only live once, right?  I loved the post by Vealcalf2000, saying she added 4 inches to her height after having lost a lot of weight.  (By the way, congrats to you, Vealcalf2000!)  I’m still in the process of losing weight.  I let myself get out of shape, but I’m so thankful to be getting my figure back!  It helps that family, friends, and co-workers are noticing and complimenting me.  It gives me even more motivation to get to my goal!  I will have to have another goal of redoing my closet! hehe  I am so glad to have some fashion advice!  Thank you for your suggestions!  And you look awesome in your pictures…I love the way you rock your style!  You Go Girl!

I usually wear business casual to work.  I love my pants!  About 4 years ago, I bought lots of Worthington pants from JC Penny’s.  These are still my go to pants and still look brand new!  I love that they are machine washable.  They aren’t expensive, but I think they look great.  These are definitely my essential pieces!   I have different styles of black, black with a pin stripe, grey, and light grey.  I love to mix and match with all different kinds of tops.  I probably sound crazy, but I am almost sad they are getting too big because I don’t think the pants available now are as good of quality as the ones I previously purchased!  These pants are more comfortable to me than a pair of jeans (crazy, I know)!

I do have a few pairs of jeans though, but they are also getting to be too big!  Belts can only do so much, lol.  I can’t wait to go shopping for new ones!  I’ll probably need some help to get some that will flatter my figure (any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!).  I did get a beautiful black dress for New Year’s Eve.  It’s a LBD…but it’s long not little! hehe  I love it.  I’d like to think it’s elegant, yet it does have a sexy slit to above the knee.

I do have a signature scent I’ve been wearing it for about 8 years now!  I fell in love with Abercrombie & Fitch’s 8 while in high school.  I’m pretty sure it was made for me, lol!  I think it melds perfectly with my skin chemistry.  I hope that makes sense…meaning that some perfumes smell different on different people.  I do love to try new scents though!  I really like Fantasy by Britney Spears.  I think it has notes of raspberry and vanilla, but I think of it as cotton candy!  I’d love to smell your favorite Miss Marisa perfume!  And with Valentine’s Day coming…maybe I can convince my S.O. for a sample kit! lol!

And I can’t forget my jewelry!  I love Lia Sophia jewelry.  I have a lot of their simple silver earrings.  I love that they can be worn with jeans and a t-shirt, but also with dress pants and a nice blouse.  So versatile!  And my favorite ring is a black onyx one, but it has been discontinued.  I will have to post a picture of it when I get home from work!  I wear it with so many different outfits!

And my favorite part of the week…the weekend!  I love to watch movies in my fleece pj pants!  These are a must for relaxation…especially with the crazy snowy weather we’re having in the Chicagoland area today!  Man I wish I was home snuggled in bed!

Much Love!
Crystal

Hey Taylor! I would have to say my go to piece in my closet is definately my bleached denim jacket! I throw it on over everything whether it be a floral dress, a white v-neck, or a simple tank. My everyday essential!

My go to item is a little different. My outfit each day is a reflection of my mood with a hint of girly and pretty. However, the one thing I always reach for in my closet in times of need is my running shoes. Putting on my running shoes and heading to the gym makes the stress of each day seem so much less. They help me focus and put me in a better mood each time I put them on! Plus, mine are teal and silver. So cute (cute being relative to running shoes that is)!

I have a pair of red leather boots I bought in Australia when I spent three months there in 1999. They usually get lots of compliments and people ask where I got them.

I think this was my favorite post! I always loved all your clothes and specially your accessories in the rzp, so it was exciting to see your wardrobe.
My go to piece is really boring but I think is my white v-neck shirt. I have like 10 pieces of it, and wear them whenever I need to go to class, shopping or anything. I really love to wear them with my long black skirt, but it always looks great with a skinny or legging with a nice boot. And I can have fun putting a lot of necklaces and rings to complement the look.

Over the years I have accumulated quite the selection of styles ... anything from straight leg, flare, The Doll, 914, 912, The Lovestory, and I'm dying for a pair of their boyfriend jeans (like The Steve).

I find their fit is superb, their washes are amazing, and they are the most comfortable jeans I have ever owned.

With my petite frame and stature (I'm only 5'1"!!), J.Brands are the only jeans I buy!

My Go To Item :)
written by Inspired Ingrid, February 09, 2010
Surpisingly my go to item is not a clothing piece but an accessory set. My "accessory set" is what I like to refer to the jewerly I wear ever single day. Im so used to wearing these pieces, that when I dont have them on I feel...well...kinda naked. My gold colored dkny men's style watch, gold chain bracelet,my little gold hoops and my gold cross necklace. My acessory set makes me feel confident even if I'm wearing a simple white tank, jeans and black converse. It even makes me feel like I'm ready for anything. The cross makes me feel safe, the watch tells me the time, the earrings and bracelet give me something to figit w/ while I wait in lines. And each piece has a sentimental vaule . My accessory set also goes w/ just about any outfit I put together.
Thank you so much Taylor for your time

My Go-to Item
written by Danielle P. , February 09, 2010
My go-to item would have to be my vintage high waisted levis shorts. In the summer they are an essential and go with absolutely everything- crop tops, a light jacket or an oversized tee. In the winter I can pair them with endless amounts of funky, patterned, colored tights to still keep warm. The best part is that they are so comfortable and the high waisted look really gives a chic feeling!

Strong and delicate.
written by Carley McClintock, February 09, 2010
Taylor,

While I find myself feeling pressure more and more to dress great at my internship at Washington Life Magazine in Washington, DC, it becomes clear that I am drawn towards gentle delicate pieces with a little edge.

Currently I'm loving a sheer cream v-neck top with strong, gathered shoulders from Urban Outfitters. Its a feminine, fashion forward, yet work-place friendly top that can take the heat of dead line week. Paired with some black or dark jeans, flats and the right jewelry it is effortless chic.

P.S. I'm going to a very important party/event in March in DC. I've never been to anything of this caliber before, and I'm short on budget. Any suggestions what to wear so I can sparkle, and also stay within a reasonable price range for a college student?

my go to piece is my DKNY blazer for sure! throw on a flirty dress for party or skinny denim & a loose t-shirt for brunch! I feel an outfit looks bare without jackets, and i feel naked without layering so i'm always on the lookout for jackets in any style - cardigans, blazers, leather jackets....

also, heels make me feel better all the time! like my defence against the world!

Leggings!
written by YenStar, February 09, 2010
I've been looking for a pair of platoform booties forever!

My go to piece would probably be my high waisted black ankle leggings. They tuck and pull everything up into place, it's liek wearing spanx. They also elongate my legs and define the shape of them. I can wear leggings with just about anything and I love that. Tucked into a pair of boots for a night out or super casual with a long knit sweater or cardigan (my school staples!}. I hope they never go away I can't to pick up a pair of liquid leggings, they'd be amazing with booties.

My go to item is this awesome leopard print scarf that I got from H&M! It really adds a nice splash of color & pattern to any boring outfit. Plus it's super long, so I can do so much with it. For instance, I actually tied the ends together so that I could wear it as an infinity/circle scarf! And I learned that animal prints are subconsciously provocative, soooo ; )

My go-to item for spring is my new gold studded jean jacket. I looove it so much! I sometimes roll up the sleeves and wear it with a silk striped blouse and leggings for a more prepster look, or I pair it with a loose tank and my snakeskin leggings, with my SamEdelman Zoe booties. Such a cute endesmble. Also, just like you have your ray-bans, I have my bestey cat-eye sunnies. They're black with rad accents, and they are my favorites. You won't see me around town with out them!

Hi Taylor,

My one go-to piece would have to be my black leggings. I love to wear dresses and skirts but sometimes it's too cold to go without anything on my legs, so I throw on a pair of black leggings and I'm good to go. They look great with boots, heels, or flats. Because they're black they go with any color and any pattern. You can also wear them with long tshirts and sweaters when you're not in the mood to wear jeans. I

My Go -To Items!
written by Phoebe M., February 09, 2010
My go-to item would be a black Brooks Brothers v-neck sweater I found in a thrift store called Cure in the East Village. I actually was inspired from an episode in the Rachel Zoe Project where I saw you wear a roomy black sweater over a white T-shirt and sweatpants - it looked amazing, yet the components are so simple! And that's my favorite part of this sweater - it's so simple that it is incredibly versatile. I can wear it like you did, with sweats, and look incredibly comfortable and chic or I could put my hair up and wear some red lipstick and a skirt and it'll look very sophisticated for night. Thanks for reading this and I just wanted to say that I really, really love your style. It's pretty amazing.

I have a similar rocker chic style and am soooo not a girlie girl so my top go to pieces are:
Like you I LOVE leather jackets! So many to choose from but 2 of my all time favorites are:
1)A Kate Moss for Topshop black asymetrical zipper leather jacket from her first collection. I'm sure that it is a copy of a Rick Owens jacket but it was more affordable! I get so many comments on this item when I wear it. People always ask me about it and I think it's pretty cool too. I'm gonna try to put a picture of it in my comment but I'm not good this computer stuff so hope it shows up.

I grew up always hunting through my mothers amazing closet when she was away.
I have all these memories of my mother dashing off right after dinner with me and dressing up. She had so many gorgeous gowns and cocktail dresses and when she'd slipped into one she'd call me down to her bedroom and I'd help pick out her shoes and jewellery.
To me it seemed like my father lived in his tux, he was in it every other day and night.

A few months ago my lovely mother moved house after my dad passed away. This resulted in her sorting and cleaning out 40+ years worth of clothes she'd collected.
I got a call from her asking me to come over and there was a big pile of garment bags lying on her bed with my name on them. A few of the pieces she gave me have become my cannot-live-without items in my closet.
Among them is this gorgeous black Chanel mini-dress from the late 70s. It so classic, high front, low back and the most gorgeous embroidery you've ever seen. I also inherited a few gorgeous furs and a 2.55.
Last but no least I inherited by great grandmothers Tiffany's engagement ring which I'm now never without.

Apart from all the clothes I have, I've found that the essentials in my closet are pieces with personal significance and a story attached to them.

Love your blog Taylor, you're a doll!

2) A coppery leather motorcycle jacket by Matthew Williamson for H&M. You have no idea the HELL that I went through to get this jacket! I got to the Beverly Center at 3:00AM and waited in line for 7 hours to get my hands on this baby. Try enduring a mob of stampeding fashion crazed women pushing and trying to grab stuff out of your hands. It was worth the wait though!
3) A pair of black suede platform ankle boots by Tara Subkoff for Imitiation of Christ. These are the raddest shoes that are comfortable for 4 inch heels. They make my legs look way longer than they are. Most straight guys could care less what shoes you are wearing and certainly wouldn't ask about them but I once had a guy stop me in the airport to tell me that he thought that they were the coolest shoes that he had ever seen and where could he get a pair of them for his girlfriend!

As lame as this may sound, a staple in my wardrobe is a classic white v-neck t-shirt by Hanes. I love throwing one of these one to wear under a blazer or sweater. They look great whether I am wearing jeans, leggings or even a high-waisted skirt. These shirts are super cheap (three come in a package!) and can be found in almost every department store. So simple but with the right outfit, these shirts look awesome.

My favorite "go to" item is my navy pinstriped blazer. Top it over jeans and a nolvety tee, take it to work on a casual Friday with boyfriend khakis, go on a date in a LBD and the blazer keeps the chill away. This two-button blazer is a perfect fit, hits exactly at my mid-hip so it's not to long not to short and was purchased at least five years ago from guess where? j.crew...I love it!

Nothing expensive! in my wardrob
written by nion, February 11, 2010
Hi Taylor, Hi everyone smilies/smiley.gif

Taylor, I will say you are living on a dream of mine. I always think that how cool would it be if i can be a stylist, work with clothes, so many clothes, and accessories. And get to see so many medels & movie starts smilies/smiley.gif, and most important always know what and when to wear and make myself look good. I am manage okay with myself, just okay (I think and hope lol).

Well when its come to essential piece, yesterday i though i dont have any but then today i think again. I can just show you what i wear often. I looked in my wardrobe and see nothing flash or expensive that I can show you. But I have a few pieces that i wear them quite often. When i go on a plane, go to my husband office or just take them with me when i go somewhere and might need something to cover up later when i feel cold (when its not a real winter),

and some pair of Jeans that i wear often,

and there is one thing that i almost forget and then i though how could I ? Its me the only piece of Jewelry that i wear all the time rather than my engagement ring and my wedding ring. Its a bracelet, just a simple silver bracelet but i LOVE and WEAR it all the times, for how long? ummm, lets see..about 6-7 years. smilies/smiley.gif I just love the style and I also have matching anklet, and necklet but i do not really wear them all the time, just some times.

My essential pieces,
1) Espana Jean Jacket, i bought this in a sample sale (A younger friend that work in that company got it for me) long ago, the color just soft denim color. Its very old now but I still wear it because the color just like that anyway.
2) Esprit brown jacket, its is very light weigh and vefy comfy to wear,
3) A very inexpensive silver bracelet.

I still can not figure how to post photo here, sigh...I will try again see if i have any luck smilies/smiley.gif.

Thanks you and I love what you are sharing with us.

Always the black

My go-to piece has got to be a pair of black Sisley slacks I got from Benetton a few years ago. I have a short torso, high waist, long legs, and high bootysmilies/shocked.gif. That makes it way hard for me to have pants fit the way I like. I got the Sisley slacks on sale for $20 - they are perfect - a thicker waistband so there's no bunching or rolling, a slit pocket in the back so it's a nice smooth fit, and a more fitted thigh with a longer leg and wider bottom. They are the perfect length for both flats (rare) and 4"+ (usual) heels. L-O-V-E!
A chic handbag
written by Atown, February 11, 2010
My answer may be little bit different than others. My go to item is not a piece of clothing, but a classic, chic and beautiful handbag like my black Chanel caviar jumbo flap. The best thing about a fabulous purse is that it always fits. It doesn't matter I you feel fat, bloated or no longer fit into your skinny jeans! It can complete an outfit and take you from drab to fab in less than a minute.

I think fragrance is also a Great signature piece. It represents the person and their personality. I Love mixing Angel and Herve Leger together.

I prefer my T's a bit on the oversized side and reminiscent of something my boyfriend would wear, but I always make sure that I wear something tight on the bottom (e.g., skinny jeans, leather pants) and high on my feet (high heeled boots). Throw on a leather jacket or blazer and you've got a hot outfit. smilies/smiley.gif

The Perfect Blank Canvas
written by ditrolni, February 12, 2010
Choosing one go to piece was a lot harder than I thought. Then it hit me like a ton of Chanel bags falling from the sky. When in doubt, I run to my crisp white tailored button down. I have one with french cuffs and one without. It looks fabulous with fun chunky necklaces and great with just my tiny cross necklace. Roll the sleeves up with my oversized Rolex or even my Swatch, then keep them buttoned up with my Cape Cod watch and LOVE bracelet. I can wear big cluster rings, or simply my wedding rings. Giant hoops or diamond stud earrings. Yellow gold, white gold, silver. I can wear it with skirts, jeans, pants, shorts and not to mention boots, flats, pumps, sneakers...you name it. I can sport my hair up or down, in a pony tail or wear a baseball cap. Polish my nails with O.P.I. Privacy Please or Chanel Le Vernis Black Satin. Neutral lips or classic Hollywood red. What's beautiful is you can throw belts & scarves in to the mix and have fun with it! Make your accessories define your style, not entirely the designers garment. Use this piece as your canvas and paint the most beautiful you with accessorizing how you feel at that moment. The perfect white button-down makes the handbag selection endless too. Shoulder, clutch, oversized, black, brown, red, green, metallic, suede, leather...you name it! With this piece it's all about the accessories. This piece has no rules! Aviators or Drunk-Mom sunglasses! Out shopping, at work or at the country club...no boundaries! It doesn't matter if the pieces are from Target or Cartier, as long as the shirt is clean, bright white and fits well, it's a must have staple for any closet. Wow! Writing this just gave me so many more thoughts on how much fun this perfect piece is! Thank you for such creative homework. Now I just need to add Miss Marisa to the equation!
black sweater
written by LauraMc, February 12, 2010
While I think you've put together a great list of essentials, I have to disagree that $165 is an affordable price for a pair of flats, at least not for the average American. While I realize that you live in L.A. and work with many celebrities, it's important to realize that most EM fans are not celebrities. Many of us do not have celebrity bank accounts, so we try look for truly reasonalbe prices. That's why we're fans of EM. We get fabulous quality make-up at a great price.

Now to tell you my essential piece from my closet is a 3/4 sleeve black sweater I got from JC Penney's. I love it because I can wear it casually with jeans or I can wear it to work or a nice night out with either a nice pair of black slacks or a skirt. Also, I can wear just about any pair of earrings (my personal favorites are gold hoops of any size) or any necklace, and it looks great. I could wear this sweater twice in the same week and no one would notice, because of the accessories to use with it. Sorry, I don't have a picture on post, but I have bad luck anyway trying to post them.

Taylor, thanks for the list! smilies/smiley.gif

I would say my Christian Louboutin black patent ron rons. So classic and goes with everything. Plus, these are my most comfortable pair.

My essential go to piece in my closet is my juicy couture tony military hooded coat. A gorgeous tan with big details and amazing tailoring. Perfect for rain or shine, day or night..it literally goes over any outfit ( or lack of one smilies/wink.gif ) i choose and always looks classic and chic. LOVE!

My go-to is either my fitted blazer or cashmere cardigan. I like to layer and end up throwing on a blazer or cardigan.
Black cotton sweater
written by bverma, February 14, 2010
Very boring, but I love my black cotton sweater from Banana Republic. This sweater goes with EVERTHING! I love it! I can wear it with slacks, jean, or a skirt. It so versatile! We all know black is slimming as well. I love that it's made of cotton because I can wear it all year round. It's my essential travel piece as I've taken it to Europe and South American. It's lasted me forever as well. Love it!

Hi there

The item i consider extremly essential and always must ave available is my bootcut black trousers.

I have customised them with sequins and studs and there so comfortable and go with so many items.

There a perfect fit and make me feel confident when i wear them and gives me an oooomph in my stridesmilies/grin.gif

The one item in my closet that's my go-to, essential piece is...
written by charisse.m, February 14, 2010
my comfy black ballet flats that I pair with black leggings and tunic dresses which is my basic look while I'm pregnant. I'm usually a jeans or pants kind of girl, but ever since I got pregnant I've preferred the comfortable fit of leggings. And of course, I need some sensible but still stylish shoes! Again, I usually go for heels (I could run in stilettos all day) but now I'm finding myself leaning more towards flats.
Jean Jacket
written by Armeen, February 14, 2010
I love my jean jacket, I dont if those are still in style but I love wearing it. It works great over dresses, skirts and well even sweats. I got a really cute one for my birthday a few year ago, its simple with a nice cut and the perfect wash, not to light or dark.

Here is something slightly similar: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_s4rC...30_300.jpg

My go to item right now is a beautiful merino wool sweater that i got from ireland!
Where i live, we are in the middle of one of the worst winters in our history. In the last 2 months we have gotten 4 storms with accumulations of over 70" of snow. This past week we got about 2 ft alone and are due for another 4-6 inches so.....looking cute is going out the window (no high heels, no skirts, no blazers......)
I need warmth and this sweater gives it to me while also looking classic and cute smilies/smiley.gif
It is a deep greyish green and has beautiful detailing of knotwork (and it also reminds me of the lovely country).
So although my essential piece is a bit different than most--it's what works for me. I will throw it on with a pair of jeans, a pair of cute boots, my argyle gloves, small diamond huggie earrings and my coach backpack and i am set :0

go-to, essential piece.

Best Boot Cut Jeans!
written by Lypiphera, February 15, 2010
I have a pair of boot cut jeans that I adore. They, thank goodness, have a decent amount of stretch in them, so they fit regardless of bloating or the holidays. They always make my butt look great and never create muffin tops.

They're a nice dark color, so I can wear them to work, out and about, a family gathering, or to an event. I wore them to go see Wicked and felt right at home with what everyone else was wearing.

American Rag Boot-Cut Jeans, Creole Wash. I got them at Macy's for $39.00 - and they are on sale right now for $17.99!

These are my absolute most favorite jeans. I love wearing them with boots. With their wash, they really make me look tall, which is not an easy feat because I'm only about 5'5". And, they always make me feel thin, regardless of how else I might be feeling. I would be devastated if these got shrunk or damaged.

These jeans are definitely my go to item, and I never had to break them in. Dress up, dress down; they're perfect for almost any occasion.

Because of all this snow, the go-to accessory in my closet right now are my snow boots--I have to plan entire outfits around them now! Fortunately, I was able to find boots that are as cute as they are warm and safe.

I don't know what I would do without them this winter!!!

My essential in my closet is my grey blazer with a black belt. I can dress it up by wearing it with black slacks or wear it with some nice wide leg jeans and black heels for a night out with the girls.

I am glad to see you have found a way to continue to have a voice - you are a really talented stylist and clearly the response here should prove to you that you have an audience who wants to hear what you think!

My go to piece is a black Ellen Tracy Wool and Angora blazer - it is so soft and "fluid", yet has a nice structure with beautiful cuffs that flair out and a single high waisted button. I wear it with black jeans and a sequin tshirt on dates with my husband, and also wear it with black wool slacks and a silk blouse for business meetings.

I found this jacket on sale at SteinMart for $35!!!! Ellen would be horrified to hear it, but lucky for me.

Good luck with everything moving forward - clearly you should be the master of your own domain and working under someone elses identity can provide a great training, but these opportunities by nature are not designed to be forever!

Black Skinny Jeans
written by Kiyana, August 04, 2010
I don't know how I ever lived without my black skinny jeans. I bought a pair of skinny black jeans from J.Crew last year, and I immediately fell in love. I bought another identical pair, and two more pairs with zipper details that give me an "edgier" look - I like pairing the feminine with the masculine. These jeans can look casual with a t-shirt and denim jacket, or they can look dressed up with a flirty top and jewelry. I love wearing them with my leather motorcycle jacket, which is definitely another one of my favorite things to wear.
