As a stylist, I find myself constantly surrounded by clothing and accessories, whether I am on a shoot, at a designer's showroom, or at home picking out my outfit for the day.
Seasons come and go, trends rise and fall - but there is something to be said for those pieces that you can wear year after year. This is my guide for the essential items that every woman should have in her wardrobe.
I figured I would begin my "essentials" guide by snapping a few photos of these items from my own closet, and then suggesting the best ways that you can get the look right now. So buckle up and get ready for a fashionable ride!
The Little Black Dress
There is nothing more classic or versatile than a great little black cocktail dress.
This is one of favorite little numbers, a flirty Miu Miu dress that I always turn to when I feel like I have nothing to wear.
I found this vintage dress at The Way We Wore, the embroidered details are magical and I love the dimension of the sleeves.
Investing in a perfectly tailored, chic and slightly sexy LBD is so essential to any closet. Trust me, once you find "the one," you'll be set for everything from a first date to an office cocktail party to a night of drinks and dancing.
Right now, I'm really feeling:
1. Diane von Furstenberg's Stitches Dress
2. Gold Hawk's Drawstring Mini Dress
3. Mason by Michelle Mason's Asymmetrical Dress with Metal Trim
4. Bailey 44's Beginners Lucky Dress
The Quintessential Blazer
When I want to add some polish to my "ladies who lunch with an edge" personal style, I throw on my go-to black Chanel blazer.
This translates perfectly from day to night - start with a pair of shredded denim with a loose white tank during the day, then throw on a slinky cocktail dress and roll up the sleeves once the sun sets.
After scouring my favorite online shopping destinations, these are my fave blazers of the minute:
1. ASOS' Boyfriend Blazer
2. Forever 21's Shoulder Studette Blazer
3. Balmain's Cotton Canvas Studded Military Blazer
4. Elizabeth and James' Blade Runner Jacket
The Classic Black Pump
Every girl needs that classic black pump with a leg-lengthening silhouette - my personal favorite is Casadei's platform pump. A beautiful pair that is always in style.

If you've been on the quest for the ideal lack pump, check out my picks below for some savage suggestions.
1. Aldo's Destime Pump
2. L.A.M.B.'s Zena Lug Pump
3. Yves Saint Laurent's Eelskin Pump
4. Nine West's Rocha Pump
The Metallic Bag
Let's add some sparkle into the as-of-now monochromatic mix! I have been salivating over my Chanel metallic 2.55 bags more than usual lately, and I think that every girl needs a metallic bag to add an extra dash of sparkle to any outfit.
I've discovered two scrumptious options for you... both of these options are simply beautiful - and definitely more wallet-friendly! - alternatives.
1. Forever 21's Basket Weave Purse
2. DKNY's Fold-Over Metallic Leather Clutch
The Neutral Flat
I recently found a perfect pair of flats in Saks Fifth Avenue Private Label's basic yet beautiful (and quite affordable at $165) ballet flat. While I usually wear my Lanvin flats, these are a fun alternative.
They key here is finding a flat in a neutral shade that will work with pretty much every color you may build an outfit around.
I also really like:
1. Lanvin's Linen and Leather Ballerina Flat
2. Steve Madden's Tama Leopard Flat
3. Coye Nokes' Amelia Flat
The Motorcycle Jacket
There's a difference between a leather jacket and a leather motorcycle jacket. One is predictable, and the other adds a kick to even the sweetest of looks. A great motorcycle jacket is a true investment as it is a timeless way to toughen up a floral frock or jeans and a tee.
Try topping a gown with one of these bad boys at your next big event and watch the compliments roll in (just make sure the event isn't black tie!)
I switch it up between this great Juicy jacket I found a few seasons ago and a studded Robins biker jacket I just got.
Love the studded detail on this guy.
Here are latest biker jackets that I'm drooling over:
1. Vince's Asymmetrical Leather Jacket
2. Forever 21's Cropped Faux Leather Jacket
3. Rick Owens' Metallic Lambskin Biker Jacket
The Platform Bootie
I have given my Christian Louboutin suede booties so much wear since I got them, in large part because of the great grey shade. Grey goes with black, brown, tan... pretty much everything and anything.
A grey suede ankle boot is a great investment, as grey works year round with every season.

I've found strikingly similar options in the following two pairs:
1. Dolce Vita's Vita Draped Suede Booties with Open Toe
2. Steve Madden's Cassiee Bootie
Your Signature Perfume
As you know if you read my first blog, I am obsessed with Ebba's Miss Marisa perfume - this distinctly different yet intriguing scent is perfection.
If you don't have a signature scent yet, I'd suggest that you give Miss Marisa a spin!
FUN TASK:
What is the one item in your closet that's your go-to, essential piece? Ten lucky winners will receive the full Miss Marisa experience, including the original Miss Marisa, Miss Marisa Nuit, Miss Marisa Tropical, Miss Marisa Fleur, and Miss Marisa Zest. I'll pick ten of my favorites!

My to-go all time fav piece in my closet has to be this simple, beige flow-y t-shirt looking blouse which goes with EVERYTHING. I wear it with jeans for the casual look, and tuck it into skirts for a dressier look..and the funny thing is, it's my sister's! She let me have it for a little while and I fell in love. She bought it in Korea when she went for a visit last summer, and it didn't cost more than 20 bucks! And since it has the loose look, I can eat all I want at a dinner out, and my gut won't show. Haha. I love it.
Can't wait for your next post where you show more of your closet!

Loves wearing it with jeans, boots, a tee and some bling, or over a sequin and chiffon shell and skinny grey pinstriped pants.
But then there's always my vintage silver brocade jacket I scored for three bucks at an estate sale, or my olive military jacket, or my slouchy grey boots....
Tuxedo jacket! I'm going with the tuxedo jacket! Great to read about your own wardrobe essentials, and I can't WAIT to get my Miss Marisa pack.....Kidding! I'm kidding. Sort of...

I wear them with everything, jeans, skirts, miniskirts, under hoodies or blazers, in every season!
They are too cute and confortable to resist! Also, I think that they give you the possibility to express yourself and your personality, and let you play with images, tests etc. With t-shirt you can ber really original, and, also, you can design them yourself to be unique!

There are a lot of lovely things that money can buy, but one thing I'm convinced that money can't buy is a perfectly worn-in pair of flats. There's simply no describing that perfect pair that's been molded and shaped in all the right places to make it your own. I only have a few select pairs that have made it to this stage, and they're worth their weight in gold; I wear them day in day out, from spring through fall, with bare feet, stockings, and leggings. They can take you from a casual weekend trip to Kensington Market hunting for vintage clothing and handmade cheeses to a night on the town when heels seem too cliché. I'm a girl who loves her flats!
My favourite pair by far was purchased last summer in Toronto's Indian District. I love going to the District to buy garam masala and henna dye, and I usually end up picking up a few extra goodies along the way. I found these gorgeous handmade gold flats and couldn't pass them up! For $20, they were a steal.
The flats are made of the most gorgeous gold leather, and are crafted by hand in India. I love that you can see all the hand stitching in the finished product! The gold is accented by gorgeous taupe openwork, and the sole is padded to make the flats amazingly comfortable to wear. I especially love how the flats are cut at the sides in traditional Indian style, as it exposes just enough of the side of your foot to make them stand out from the ordinary.
I especially love the red leather sole, another traditional Indian feature. Since the sole is leather and not rubber, the shoes are incredibly flexible; combined with the gold colour, they can take me from day to night as if I'm in my favourite slippers! =)
My favourite thing about this pair of flats is knowing that I may be the only one in a room with that exact pair of shoes. I've been stopped so many times on the street with people asking me where I bought them; I love shrugging my shoulder, putting up my hands helplessly, and saying, "a little shop in the Indian District."

I live in Europe (in Lisbon, Portugal) and we have just discovered the show over here ! Which means that we have just discovered Taylor Jacobson and her GREAT STYLE ! You are such an inspiration ! Not only with your mindblowing style but also with your work ethic.
Now back to your new life, thank you so much for sharing all your tips with us and for showing us your closet and AMAZING shoes & bags :-)
About my favourite things, not original but I would have to say by leather jacket. I bought it probably 8 years ago in France. This must be the best investment ever! It has a biker twist and is really easy to wear all year round! Beijnhos

The grey sweatshirt boyfriend blazer: I fell in love the first time I saw this blazer. It's the classic boyfriend but with a twist. It is made out of grey sweatshirt material! It sooo comfy and goes with everything. Whether I'm going to class in denim and a v-neck or if I'm going out in a black outfit that needs some contrast. This works for every occasion and is slightly less dressy looking than the other black boyfriend blazers that inhabit my closet.
The oversized black cardi- I love love love oversized EVERYTHING. I throw on this cardigan all the time. I like to snuggle up and hide in it when I'm going out and it pairs amazing with denim or leggings. It looks great with stilettos or flat over the knee boots and It really gives me the slouchy NYC street style that I love.

I wear them with heels and a cute top for going out, or roll them up and wear with a burn-out shirt and sandals, and even to work with a button-down, blazer and pumps. They are also great to tuck into boots... the possibilities are endless! Casual, dress-up, dess-down, and sexy.

I usually wear business casual to work. I love my pants! About 4 years ago, I bought lots of Worthington pants from JC Penny’s. These are still my go to pants and still look brand new! I love that they are machine washable. They aren’t expensive, but I think they look great. These are definitely my essential pieces! I have different styles of black, black with a pin stripe, grey, and light grey. I love to mix and match with all different kinds of tops. I probably sound crazy, but I am almost sad they are getting too big because I don’t think the pants available now are as good of quality as the ones I previously purchased! These pants are more comfortable to me than a pair of jeans (crazy, I know)!
I do have a few pairs of jeans though, but they are also getting to be too big! Belts can only do so much, lol. I can’t wait to go shopping for new ones! I’ll probably need some help to get some that will flatter my figure (any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!). I did get a beautiful black dress for New Year’s Eve. It’s a LBD…but it’s long not little! hehe I love it. I’d like to think it’s elegant, yet it does have a sexy slit to above the knee.
I do have a signature scent I’ve been wearing it for about 8 years now! I fell in love with Abercrombie & Fitch’s 8 while in high school. I’m pretty sure it was made for me, lol! I think it melds perfectly with my skin chemistry. I hope that makes sense…meaning that some perfumes smell different on different people. I do love to try new scents though! I really like Fantasy by Britney Spears. I think it has notes of raspberry and vanilla, but I think of it as cotton candy! I’d love to smell your favorite Miss Marisa perfume! And with Valentine’s Day coming…maybe I can convince my S.O. for a sample kit! lol!
And I can’t forget my jewelry! I love Lia Sophia jewelry. I have a lot of their simple silver earrings. I love that they can be worn with jeans and a t-shirt, but also with dress pants and a nice blouse. So versatile! And my favorite ring is a black onyx one, but it has been discontinued. I will have to post a picture of it when I get home from work! I wear it with so many different outfits!
And my favorite part of the week…the weekend! I love to watch movies in my fleece pj pants! These are a must for relaxation…especially with the crazy snowy weather we’re having in the Chicagoland area today! Man I wish I was home snuggled in bed!
Much Love!

my go to essentials would be a V-necks! no matter what, you can dress them up or down with accesories!
another motorcycle leather jacket you could add to your mix would be the victoria's secret one, it almost resembles a rick owens jacket!

My go to piece is really boring but I think is my white v-neck shirt. I have like 10 pieces of it, and wear them whenever I need to go to class, shopping or anything. I really love to wear them with my long black skirt, but it always looks great with a skinny or legging with a nice boot. And I can have fun putting a lot of necklaces and rings to complement the look.
Anyways, love you Taylor!

Over the years I have accumulated quite the selection of styles ... anything from straight leg, flare, The Doll, 914, 912, The Lovestory, and I'm dying for a pair of their boyfriend jeans (like The Steve).
I find their fit is superb, their washes are amazing, and they are the most comfortable jeans I have ever owned.
With my petite frame and stature (I'm only 5'1"!!), J.Brands are the only jeans I buy!
By the way Taylor, my name is Marisa! I would love love love to try out my name-sake perfume!

While I find myself feeling pressure more and more to dress great at my internship at Washington Life Magazine in Washington, DC, it becomes clear that I am drawn towards gentle delicate pieces with a little edge.
Currently I'm loving a sheer cream v-neck top with strong, gathered shoulders from Urban Outfitters. Its a feminine, fashion forward, yet work-place friendly top that can take the heat of dead line week. Paired with some black or dark jeans, flats and the right jewelry it is effortless chic.
P.S. I'm going to a very important party/event in March in DC. I've never been to anything of this caliber before, and I'm short on budget. Any suggestions what to wear so I can sparkle, and also stay within a reasonable price range for a college student?

My go to piece would probably be my high waisted black ankle leggings. They tuck and pull everything up into place, it's liek wearing spanx. They also elongate my legs and define the shape of them. I can wear leggings with just about anything and I love that. Tucked into a pair of boots for a night out or super casual with a long knit sweater or cardigan (my school staples!}. I hope they never go away I can't to pick up a pair of liquid leggings, they'd be amazing with booties.

My go-to item for spring is my new gold studded jean jacket. I looove it so much! I sometimes roll up the sleeves and wear it with a silk striped blouse and leggings for a more prepster look, or I pair it with a loose tank and my snakeskin leggings, with my SamEdelman Zoe booties. Such a cute endesmble. Also, just like you have your ray-bans, I have my bestey cat-eye sunnies. They're black with rad accents, and they are my favorites. You won't see me around town with out them!
xoxo Keep rocking Taylorrrrrrrrr =)

My one go-to piece would have to be my black leggings. I love to wear dresses and skirts but sometimes it's too cold to go without anything on my legs, so I throw on a pair of black leggings and I'm good to go. They look great with boots, heels, or flats. Because they're black they go with any color and any pattern. You can also wear them with long tshirts and sweaters when you're not in the mood to wear jeans. I

I have a similar rocker chic style and am soooo not a girlie girl so my top go to pieces are:
Like you I LOVE leather jackets! So many to choose from but 2 of my all time favorites are:
1)A Kate Moss for Topshop black asymetrical zipper leather jacket from her first collection. I'm sure that it is a copy of a Rick Owens jacket but it was more affordable! I get so many comments on this item when I wear it. People always ask me about it and I think it's pretty cool too. I'm gonna try to put a picture of it in my comment but I'm not good this computer stuff so hope it shows up.

I have all these memories of my mother dashing off right after dinner with me and dressing up. She had so many gorgeous gowns and cocktail dresses and when she'd slipped into one she'd call me down to her bedroom and I'd help pick out her shoes and jewellery.
To me it seemed like my father lived in his tux, he was in it every other day and night.
A few months ago my lovely mother moved house after my dad passed away. This resulted in her sorting and cleaning out 40+ years worth of clothes she'd collected.
I got a call from her asking me to come over and there was a big pile of garment bags lying on her bed with my name on them. A few of the pieces she gave me have become my cannot-live-without items in my closet.
Among them is this gorgeous black Chanel mini-dress from the late 70s. It so classic, high front, low back and the most gorgeous embroidery you've ever seen. I also inherited a few gorgeous furs and a 2.55.
Last but no least I inherited by great grandmothers Tiffany's engagement ring which I'm now never without.
Apart from all the clothes I have, I've found that the essentials in my closet are pieces with personal significance and a story attached to them.
Love your blog Taylor, you're a doll!

2) A coppery leather motorcycle jacket by Matthew Williamson for H&M. You have no idea the HELL that I went through to get this jacket! I got to the Beverly Center at 3:00AM and waited in line for 7 hours to get my hands on this baby. Try enduring a mob of stampeding fashion crazed women pushing and trying to grab stuff out of your hands. It was worth the wait though!
3) A pair of black suede platform ankle boots by Tara Subkoff for Imitiation of Christ. These are the raddest shoes that are comfortable for 4 inch heels. They make my legs look way longer than they are. Most straight guys could care less what shoes you are wearing and certainly wouldn't ask about them but I once had a guy stop me in the airport to tell me that he thought that they were the coolest shoes that he had ever seen and where could he get a pair of them for his girlfriend!
Thanks for your blog, it's the highlight of my week!

Taylor, I will say you are living on a dream of mine. I always think that how cool would it be if i can be a stylist, work with clothes, so many clothes, and accessories. And get to see so many medels & movie starts
, and most important always know what and when to wear and make myself look good. I am manage okay with myself, just okay (I think and hope lol). Well when its come to essential piece, yesterday i though i dont have any but then today i think again. I can just show you what i wear often. I looked in my wardrobe and see nothing flash or expensive that I can show you. But I have a few pieces that i wear them quite often. When i go on a plane, go to my husband office or just take them with me when i go somewhere and might need something to cover up later when i feel cold (when its not a real winter),
and some pair of Jeans that i wear often,
and there is one thing that i almost forget and then i though how could I ? Its me the only piece of Jewelry that i wear all the time rather than my engagement ring and my wedding ring. Its a bracelet, just a simple silver bracelet but i LOVE and WEAR it all the times, for how long? ummm, lets see..about 6-7 years.
I just love the style and I also have matching anklet, and necklet but i do not really wear them all the time, just some times. My essential pieces,
1) Espana Jean Jacket, i bought this in a sample sale (A younger friend that work in that company got it for me) long ago, the color just soft denim color. Its very old now but I still wear it because the color just like that anyway.
2) Esprit brown jacket, its is very light weigh and vefy comfy to wear,
3) A very inexpensive silver bracelet.
I still can not figure how to post photo here, sigh...I will try again see if i have any luck
. Thanks you and I love what you are sharing with us.

My go to item would def have to be my Theory boyfriend blazer w/ a simple white tank or tee, skinnys and my brown flat frye boots...and always a big gold neclace!...this outfit always seems to do the trick!
By the way, I just wanted to tell you i think you are awesome!!! i always looked forward to seeing you on Rachel Zoe just to see what you would be wearing! You have the most awesome style and you can pull anything off! I am especially obsessed with your navy Chanel bag you always carried.

. That makes it way hard for me to have pants fit the way I like. I got the Sisley slacks on sale for $20 - they are perfect - a thicker waistband so there's no bunching or rolling, a slit pocket in the back so it's a nice smooth fit, and a more fitted thigh with a longer leg and wider bottom. They are the perfect length for both flats (rare) and 4"+ (usual) heels. L-O-V-E!

I think accessories make an outfit your own as well. It can make or break an outfit.
I always feel that you should spend money on the key pieces. A Great Bag, Nice shoes and Accessories. You can dress up an outfit that ranges from any cost.
I think fragrance is also a Great signature piece. It represents the person and their personality. I Love mixing Angel and Herve Leger together.

My favorite go-to piece would be a classical beige trench coat, that, to me goes with almost everything and adds an instant chic touch to every outfit.
Such a classical piece!
One day, I'll buy myself a Burberry one! hehe

My go to item is my rainbow scarf. I don't really care what I'm wearing; I just throw it on if I need extra warmth.
Originally, it was for my Halloween costume as a rainbow, but really I think it adds an extra burst of brightness to my outfit and mood.
and I found it at Target!

Now to tell you my essential piece from my closet is a 3/4 sleeve black sweater I got from JC Penney's. I love it because I can wear it casually with jeans or I can wear it to work or a nice night out with either a nice pair of black slacks or a skirt. Also, I can wear just about any pair of earrings (my personal favorites are gold hoops of any size) or any necklace, and it looks great. I could wear this sweater twice in the same week and no one would notice, because of the accessories to use with it. Sorry, I don't have a picture on post, but I have bad luck anyway trying to post them.
Taylor, thanks for the list!

Where i live, we are in the middle of one of the worst winters in our history. In the last 2 months we have gotten 4 storms with accumulations of over 70" of snow. This past week we got about 2 ft alone and are due for another 4-6 inches so.....looking cute is going out the window (no high heels, no skirts, no blazers......)
I need warmth and this sweater gives it to me while also looking classic and cute
It is a deep greyish green and has beautiful detailing of knotwork (and it also reminds me of the lovely country).
So although my essential piece is a bit different than most--it's what works for me. I will throw it on with a pair of jeans, a pair of cute boots, my argyle gloves, small diamond huggie earrings and my coach backpack and i am set :0

They're a nice dark color, so I can wear them to work, out and about, a family gathering, or to an event. I wore them to go see Wicked and felt right at home with what everyone else was wearing.
American Rag Boot-Cut Jeans, Creole Wash. I got them at Macy's for $39.00 - and they are on sale right now for $17.99!

These are my absolute most favorite jeans. I love wearing them with boots. With their wash, they really make me look tall, which is not an easy feat because I'm only about 5'5". And, they always make me feel thin, regardless of how else I might be feeling. I would be devastated if these got shrunk or damaged.
These jeans are definitely my go to item, and I never had to break them in. Dress up, dress down; they're perfect for almost any occasion.

My go to piece is a black Ellen Tracy Wool and Angora blazer - it is so soft and "fluid", yet has a nice structure with beautiful cuffs that flair out and a single high waisted button. I wear it with black jeans and a sequin tshirt on dates with my husband, and also wear it with black wool slacks and a silk blouse for business meetings.
I found this jacket on sale at SteinMart for $35!!!! Ellen would be horrified to hear it, but lucky for me.
Good luck with everything moving forward - clearly you should be the master of your own domain and working under someone elses identity can provide a great training, but these opportunities by nature are not designed to be forever!

Down Coat
http://coatdown.com/

The best part about their blazers are the androgyny behind them. I love it when I can wear an edgy shirt with a more feminine jacket. It balances out the outfit and it does wonders for my self-esteem. I can't tell you how many times I've put outfits together with the blazers, paired it with a great v-neck, and walked the streets with a confident umph in my steps.
The funny thing is, I've found myself superstitious with my blazers. I've worn a blazer every day I've had a test and I swear I do so much better. I think the blazer makes me feel so good that at the end of the day, regardless of the grade, I know I've done my best and I felt good doing so!
My favorite outfit is pairing a black v-neck or black collar button up (the men's equivalent to a LBD) with a pair of Levi's slim straight jeans with a pair of vibrant converses, topped off with my raybans (the fashion love of my life) and I'm good to go.
Was wondering what your favorite shoe brands were and what you look for in shoes!
