IN THE GARDEN

ITG_Taylorskate_copy

We're currently in the middle of winter, and although it's 70° and sunny in LA, there's snow on the ground everywhere else. In these winter months, I look to the garden for inspiration. Flowers are always a cheerful pick-me-up.

There's something romantic about a garden. The colors, the textures, the smells.

With spring just around the corner, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite ways that flowers have been incorporated into art, fashion, and home decor.

I'm a huge Andy Warhol fan, and love his series titled "Happy Flower Gathering Days."

The man was brilliant.
My favorite flowers are tulips. All colors. There's just something so sweet and happy about them.

ITG_TUL_1

The new pinkish-coral shade that Carina created called "Lip Lock" really reminds me of the delicate beauty of these tulips

This garden of white tulips that seemingly goes on forever brings a smile to my face.

I have these beautiful vintage Gucci drinking glasses that are painted with flowers, and I love using them when I throw special dinner parties.

It comes as no surprise that the great design houses used floral motifs in their spring collections, but the spring 2010 RTW collection of Japanese designer Tsumori Chisato really caught my eye, for her subtle use of the garden theme in her inspired runway looks.
These are my three favorite looks from the collection:

ITG_TC_RTW

From the vibrant colors to the beautiful silhouettes, these dresses instantly transport me to into a lush imaginary garden.

ITG_TC_RTW_2

I'm also drooling over the above ensembles - the vivid artistic patterns and tiny fanciful flowers work together in perfect harmony.

Tsumori also tapped into one of my favorite ways to mix and match floral prints... with stripes. I am always a fan of a good stripe, and love the combination of florals and stripes, so fresh.

Try pairing Rachel Roy's Jacquard Racer Back Tank with Alice + Olivia's Striped High Waist Skirt, or why not throw on an oversized men's t-shirt, like Bruuns Bazaar Stripe T-Shirt with a pretty party skirt, like Diane von Furstenberg's Kawa Sequin Skirt?

ITG_gtl_1

I was flipping through the new issue of Harper's Bazaar (with Kate the Great on the cover) and was so into this Dior Spring 2010 floral and lace dress I scanned it so I could show you! Soo good.

ITG_dior2010

In keeping with the floral theme, look at that gorgeous bouquet behind Carmen!

ITG_carmen

I just got these Louis Vuitton Resort 2010 heels that are adorned with black roses, kind of a dark garden look. Can't wait to wear them... it'll be like I'm walking through my very own secret garden.

I love Warhol too. Edie Sedgwick had such a fabulous style, she was one of the few her influenced that whole 60s mod look.
Nicole Richie's Winter Kate collection has a bunch of gorgeous floral dresses and tunics, very 70s. You might like some of it.

My couture line would begin with these three piecies:

1. A fitted, white blazer with satin jacquard lining of bright floral patterns. Perfect for wearing with dark denim, skinny jeans or over a bold, solid summer dress to rock it out, ending with chunky, strappy gladiator shoes with a conical heel.

2. A floral chiffon and lace dress similar to the vivid colours of the Dior 2010 Spring lace dress you mentioned above, Taylor! Royal purples, dark pinks, and hints of blue coming together in a lovely floral pattern. However, my design would be asymmetrical with a one-shoulder piece and lots of draping, ending with a pair of cute black, suede booties.

3. A long, flowy gown made of sheer, jade green fabric to keep it fresh and pretty for Spring. The piece would be special because of the detailing layer that involved a soft motif of cherry blossoms. For shoes, a pair of simple open sandals with thin light green straps.

And... this just came to mind. My collection would not be complete without outfit #4.. plain white silk cami with linen, white cuffed shorts and a light yellow bolero, with hand-stitched floral detailing along the lapelles and down the front.

Ohhhhhhhhh most definitely a perfume tree! I'm obsessed with perfumes and smelly good things and love to have one to match every mood and every outfit. Smell is THE strongest and most lasting of the senses so its best to make an amazing impact that lives on indefinitely. This is totally why I just purchased my very first bottle of Miss Marisa. I can't give it a test smell in advance since I can only order online, so the recommendation of Miss Taylor will have to do...for some reason I have a feeling this is a no-risk situation. smilies/smiley.gif Can't wait to smell and wear my new fave perfume! And if I ever could figure out how to grow it on a tree...oh believe me I would do it! Thanks Taylor for all your awesome bits of fashion/style info! Love it! xoxo

Hi Taylor,
If only it were that cheap and easy to plant the seeds to your favorite couture pieces! I would LOVE the dichotomy between a garden of "hard" or "edgy" clothing and accessories amongst the softness of florals like hydrangeas or peonies.

My absolute all time favorite designer is Azzedine Alaia. How I would die to have a secret garden full of his pieces! When I was a kid I used to go the Alaia store that used to be on Rodeo Drive (sadly it's not there anymore, it was called Alaia Chez Gallay) and dream of having everything in that store.

Today I dream of having these pieces in my closet:
Looking forward to next week!
Monica

I am so having FUN already just reading what you girls wrote ^_^
written by nion, February 16, 2010
Hi Taylor, Hi Everyone,

I have to say that this is a very FUN and full of IMAGINATION and WISHES. And I am having fun already just ready those stories that our members wrote.

So, what would I grow??? Can we plant the same tree and flowers ^_^ with others.

Umm, have to think first what and who I like!!!. Well I like BURBERRY bags, more in classic and knight print but not really into those Blue label that own by Japanese. What else, My best friend love LV, maybe I can glow some. Or I should grow the top 10 world designers clothes like Valentino Garavani, Tom Ford (Gucci), John Galliano (Dior, Givenchy), Donatella Versace (Versace), Ralph Lauren, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Chloe Karl Lagerfeld (COCO CHANEL), I am not sure I get these rights. As I do not know much about fashion and celebrities’s world. I just find from google. But I would love to know more about fashion. So I should stick around here I guess then I might rub off from Taylor a tiny bit.

And then again I am not sure that its will worth it if I grow these because I am not really a fashionable person. I would like to be but I do not think I got the look ^_^ just plain yellow Asian girl. So I think I will be better of with Jeans, regular clothes that will support me and I will bring the beauty out of them.

Enough of mumble around, I would grow a tree that give flowers as clothes, shoes, bags, accessories in season, like if its winter the tree will give winter outfits and accessories, same as other season summer, spring, autumn. Yes I would love a tree like that. The tree work for me and be my stylish, as I am not good at this. Amend. ^_^

Thanks for reading,
Nion

A Charlie Brown Jewelry Tree
written by Rebecca June, February 17, 2010
It is an easy decision for me...a jewelry tree! The problem is I am all about HEAVY jewelry. Whether it be a BIG ring, a long necklace, or a bling-y bracelet. I sadly do not know how long my jewelry tree would live though if it was producing the heavy jewelry I love. It would probably grow one chunky cocktail ring and bend in half like the Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

hands down, shoes. i have really awkward feet cause they're small but wide and its so damn hard finding shoes that fit well.... so if i could have a garden, id want a million different shoes in a million different colors. i feel like my style in terms of clothing is always changing but shoes?! they just become more comfortable with time and earn little spots in my closet... most of the time i just horde or donate old clothing, but for the most part all my shoes have their positions in my day-to-day life and so i cherish them all! ...whether its my "comfy clubbing shoes" or my "go-to flats." from sneakers to pumps... i just want shoes. haha every girl needs her shoes!

Garden of Couture
written by peacelovegap, February 21, 2010
If I were to grow couture in a garden, I think I'd protect that garden with my life.

There'd be alternating bushes of blazers and floral dresses. In front of the bushes I'd have an array of accessories of all sizes and shapes. From very large hand bangs with all sorts of studs and latches on them to big bold jewelry like cuffs and chunky necklaces, there'd be everything. All sorts of leggings; liquid, sheer, knee high, netted, black, blue, gray, etc. Surrounding these accessories would be v-necks of every color and design. A v-neck can be paired with almost anything these days! At the center of the garden would be a large try with scarves, cardigans, and shoes all hanging from it.

I have a large Weeping Willow in my back yard, and I'm thinking how great it would be to look out my kitchen window and see all of those beautiful, bright patterns and florals hanging replacing it's leafless drooping branches.

I would never be short of inspiration seeing that little miracle in my back yard!

Of course it wouldn't be so bad having access to some gorgeous flowing scarves to brighten up an outfit either. smilies/grin.gif

Shoes of course! During the summer the colors would be vibrant and spring-y (to go with the new "nude/beige/light pink" trend we're about to see) and in winter they would be bright white and dark blues. Every season would be something different. Dreaming...

(okay so I drew this the other day when I read the blog post.)

Unfortunately I didn't have any time to color it. So when you look at the picture of the flower just picture the shades of pink all over the dress. My garden would feel very light and clean like the feeling of cotton candy sort of thing. Colors would be very shades of pink, purple, blues, yellows, but not to dark though and of course white.

I grow floral shirt dresses in every color combination imaginable and then pile on my second crop of floral jewelry neckpieces. And I would wear it all year long!
Wouldn't it be sooo cool

If you could have a garden of flowers that were potent like perfume, You could scoop them up and mix and match and create lovely new fragrances every time you took a stroll in your garden.

I would want my garden filled with all of the amazing, avant-garde creations designed by the late Alexander McQueen. The flower bed would start bare, as most people associated with the fashion world feel now after his recent loss. However, overtime the flowers of calla lilies (my favorite flower), white tulips, white roses, baby's breath and peonies would flourish and prosper, overtaking the once dark area. Each representing a different aspect, but still meshing together.

I'd like to have a garden with the clothes that my grandmother made for me... her crochet shawls whit big roses, the beautiful flower scarf with white giants flower and light green sheets; the hat , the scarf and the pull decorated with cherry blossom; the skirt that seems a tulip in cream...
