Spring is upon us, and with the longer daylight hours and warm weather comes a feeling of excitement. One of my favorite springtime activities is a great outdoor dinner party, where a festive and whimsical time is had by all.
My birthday is approaching at the end of this month, and I am thinking of inviting 6 of my near and dears to celebrate with me for a nighttime backyard picnic! I'm using these photos that I love as inspiration:

I'll call for the evening to start at 6pm, right as the sun is setting. I'm going to create digital invitations through Paperless Post. This site lets you send out fine stationary over the internet, and I adore their chic, sophisticated designs. So into the eco-friendly aspect that this brings, too.
Since this is my party, I'm going to require that my guests wear a fun headpiece! I'm really into floral crowns lately, especially ones made with tiny daisies. So cute.

I'll use a brightly colored vintage textile as a blanket for us all to sit on, and I'm especially into vibrant, Moroccan-inspired prints like these.

Try finding gorgeous vintage throws with patterns like these at your local flea markets and thrift stores.
We can lounge on big Moroccan throw pillows that I'll scatter all over the backyard. I really like this Moroccan Palace Blue Pillow, and these throw pillows in Burnt Orange and Caribbean Sea.

No words for the next photos..I clearly enjoy myself way too much at outdoor dinner parties!!

For a fun centerpiece, I'll fill vintage vases with a selection of purple wildflowers, like this arrangement that I took a picture of at my parent's house. These are perfect for a nighttime picnic!

Another flower that I am obsessed with are peonies. I read in "Vanity Fair" that these are Alexander Wang's favorite flower, too.

For the rest of the centerpiece, I love tons of votive candles that will illuminate the darkness, along with traditional long white candles in vintage candelabras.

Just so chic!
Hanging lanterns on trees and stringing tons of twinkling fairy lights can transform your backyard into a whimsical wonderland.

For the menu, I'll use locally grown, seasonal ingredients for dishes that are as delicious as they are healthy. One of my best friends is an incredible cook - she does all her grocery shopping for the week on Saturday morning and can whip up the most out of control dishes. Cooking with her for my party is going to be so fun.
I'm thinking we'll start with a cold melon soup, followed by bruschetta with roasted tomatoes and basil. Love finger food.
This bruschetta recipe is my favorite and is so easy to make.

The ingredients are 6 ripe tomatoes, 2 minced cloves of garlic, 1 tsp of extra virgin olive oil, 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar, 6-8 freshly chopped basil leaves, salt and freshly ground black pepper, and a French baguette. Now, boil the tomatoes for one minute in boiling water, drain, peel, and chop the tomatoes. Preheat your oven to 450°F, and while the oven is heating, put the tomatoes, garlic, 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, and balsamic vinegar in a bowl and mix. Add the chopped basil. Add salt and pepper to taste. The slice the baguette on a diagonal about 1/2 inch thick slices. Coat one side of each slice with olive oil using a pastry brush. Place on a cooking sheet, olive oil side down. Once the oven has reached 450°F, place a tray of bread slices in the oven on the top rack. Toast for 5-6 minutes, until the bread just begins to turn golden brown. Then top with the tomato/basil mixture and it's bruschetta time.
For the main course, halibut with a jalapeno ginger sauce and roasted fennel sounds amazing. I tried this dish once and it's just soo good.

One of my favorite drinks is prosecco with fresh strawberries. A refreshing libation for a warm spring evening.
I'd love to end the night with fun DIY cupcakes. My friends made me these Chanel cupcakes for my birthday last year. I was in awe! Fantastic.

I'll keep my makeup soft and shimmery, playing with pretty pink and violet eye shadows, like Carina's Ballet Slippers (a light pearlescent lavender shade) and her spring shade Lip Lock (a shimmery soft pink).

I can't wait for this enchanting, delightful night in the backyard, where I can raise a toast with dear friends while being surrounded by all sorts of beautiful things. Happy birthday to me :)
FUN TASK:
If you could throw your dream dinner party, where would it take place and what would be on the menu? The possibilities are limitless, let your mind run wild.
I'll send Ballet Slippers, Lip Lock, and this Vintage Feminine Beaded Headwrap in Pink Flowers to a few of my favorites.

I loooooove the Chanel cupcakes! Too pretty to eat.
I'm kinda known among my friends as the dork with all the lavish ideas becuase I love trying new things. I usually suggest restaurants, activities (neon paintballing, anyone?), accessories, etc. I love planning a fun day from beginning to end….breakfast at a great cafe, a drive to an obscure but awesome place to sightsee, a vintage clothing store, a free outdoor music show, lunch in a beautiful park, then a dinner party with lots of comfy pillows to rest after a packed day.
My dream dinner party would involve one of those low Japanese tables so you can sit on the floor. Each person would have his or her own handwritten Calligraphy name card on the table and a small vase with each person's favorite flower or plant in it. Linen table mats in the person's favorite color. Doesn't matter if it all clashes, hehe. Votive candles all around the room. Music in the background will be a mix of everyone's favorite artists and genres.
Food: cheese plate with a large variety…from the mild and harmless to the stinky. Fruit salad with powdered sugar on top and fresh cream. A selection of bread for the cheese. Daikon salad. Chicken with lettuce cups made from the best ingredients. Finger sandwiches of all kinds. Handrolled sushi that each guest can do him or herself from a variety of materials. The person will have a choice to go full out with sashmi or something more familiar (chicken, veggies, cooked fish, whatever). Pick your own filling to your heart's desire. A light miso soup. Dessert is hot chocolate fondants with a selection of syrups or lavender, rose, and green tea cupcakes, which we would move outside for under a string of lights.
Drink: Mint mojitos, wine and sake selections, and lavender bellinis. Plus a selection of rarer and unusual teas.
Dresscode is make sure you wear your ONE favorite clothing item or accessory (and only one…the thing they have to pry from your cold dead hands). I think it's kinda interesting to see what people prize, be it a designer purse or a handmade knit hat from a dear grandmother that's falling apart but still cherished (um, the hat, not grandma…haha). As for the rest of your outfit, the rule is to be comfortable and yourself. Wear your favorite bunny slippers or sky high heels.
I'd like those intricately designed light projections on the walls. Like this (link here…so pretty: http://ocaudiovisualsolutions....ing_16.jpg), but obviously not as big, lol.
Each guest gets a small handmade parting gift that I think they'd like. Maybe jewelry, a drawing, a picture frame made from reclaimed material. Sorry this is so long...I got excited thinking about this!

I was inspired by the teacup ride in Disneyland. I decided to use my friend's backyard as our dinner setting. I wanted to capture the same feel as the attraction has by hanging paper lamps all around the backyard. The scene of Alice in Wonderland is chaotic, so I want things to be chaotic yet eclectic. I'm a huge fan of color so coordinated chaos is a must (if that's even possible).
First, all my guests must show up as characters from Alice in Wonderland. The catch is that the looks cannot be too literal. In fact, I'd prefer them to be modern day versions of the characters. My boyfriend is going to be "The Mad Hatter" and will rock a nice fedora while I will be the March Hare, his faithful insane companion
Here's a list of how I wanted my guests to interpret the characters...
Alice... any blue dress with a killer edge
Cheshire Cat... I want stripes, possibly pink or purple. Make up will envolve wings on the end of the eyes
Queen of Hearts... I want a great red and black motif. Possibly a dress with volume.
White Queen... I want this to be a dusty pink dress, draped fabrics and very vintage
Jabberwockey... I want this character to be the interpretation from the Dance Crew, JabbaWockeez, which will include white gloves and a white mask
The Talking Flowers... any floral print or floral accessories or hints of flower. I want them to challenge Carrie Bradshaw and her love for flowers
So that's just a few of the characters and dress codes. As for table decorations, I want the entire table to be covered with scattered playing cards, chess pieces, and completely filled with different tea and coffee cups. White rabbits candies (a fillipino candy, look it up! They;re yummy) will be scattered all over the grass.
The menu will consist of my favorites.
I love breakfast, so it's breakfast for dinner! Egg's benedict. Yum. It'd be funny to place hard boiled eggs on the platter with drawn faces of fear and worry that an egg is about to eat. So bizarrre yet fun!
I would love lobster tails for a follow up. I want the plate to have the claws clamping onto the sides as if the lobster fought to not be eaten. And the end would be sushi. I haven't found a way to dress it oddly but once I find out I'll let you know! Such an odd mix, I know but what better time to serve it than an Alice in Wonderland Dinner party? For dessert, it'll be chocolate covered strawberry tuxedos and dresses. By this, I mean the strawberries will be decorated with chocolate, which will be used to design a tuxedo look to them as well as dresses.
Sadly my birthday isn't until August, but I'm super excited to throw my Unbirthday Party

She is having a theme of Alice in wonderland and I want her to make people wear a hat but I don't think she will. I'm thinking I will just wear one anyway. I'm so loving that vintage headband. You have again inspired me.
Thanks from Melbourne, Australia.

We often have parties and I love to go all out. We always have a variety of foods off the BBQ from shishkabs to filet mignion...we like to mix it up and have something for everyone. I am also big on salads so I make so many different ones like my famous crab/avocado salad...YUM!!! You chop up a few Avocados, some crab meat (or the fake stuff), spray with lemon ad salt and pepper and mix in some mayo! Mix the ingridents and chill for a few hours...I usually make this the morning off
BTW those bruchetas sounds so easy to make and I love them so next time I have a party I am making those (which is this Sunday!!!) lol
I LOVE hosting parties and like evertyhing to be perfect...I light up the torches everywhere around the yard and pool it gives light and keeps musquitos away
I have solar lights running down the whole deck and have a few lanterns running as centerpices. I like serving cocktails for the girls (boys have their beer but we still get one who sticks to my cocktails). My favorite is called Poinsietta! You mix in a little bit of Cointreau, chamapagne, cranberry Juice ad a little lemon juice, serve in champange glasses with one fresh cranberry floating around
So yes, while there are many places I would enjoy have backyard parties...I would still come back home and have one for my friends because a party is not a good party without your friends there
Ok fine - I am naming one imaginery place where I would have a party lol as long as I can bring my friends...
I would have it at Hameau de la Raine it is a place where Marie Antoinete used as her gateway...
"For Marie Antoinette, the hameau was an escape from the regulated life style of the Court at Versailles"

I don't thinkk this place even needs any decorations it is a charm itself!
P.S. I would still serve all the food and drinks as I already do
I would just have someone else make it...lol

For dinner we would have chicken risotto and some rolls. For dessert we would have cinnamon rolls, made in the pot and some homemade fruit rolls! I don't think that we would need any decorations, just the natural look of it all. For drinks, we would have to crack out the dehydrated wine for the ladies and the men would have to pack in their own drinks haha.

For an appetizer we would have shrimp cocktails, for a salad we would have green herb salad with champagne 'vinegairrette, the amil course would be bourbon chicken with lemon potato wedges and for dessert chocolate pots and cream yummy!

I would ask the locals what there favorite meals were and make those! I would not want to take away from the beauty of the location so decorations would probably just be some tiki torches to light the way

We would drink wines from local wineries, for appetizers I always love cheese and crackers as well as grapes and of course Bruschetta!
I also love a beautiful marguerhita eggplant and of course Pasta. I would really want to soak up the local flavour so I would hire a local caterer or someone who caters on the side, but I would want some amazing home cooked dishes and would give them freedom to recomend some local favorites!
So fun!

i would certainly have to have one of those crazy long dining table and some incredibly cool gothic candelabras!
look at this awesome castle I found.
sorry i get thrilled by how old these are and yet still standing! amazing craftsmanship!
we would feast on gaming hen, soups, and fruits, and bread and a giant whimsy cake for desert!
something like this but solid, no stars and with some fabulous elegant topper of flowers feathers and just spectacular
that would be really cool and so fun!

For desert we would have a choice of chocolate mouse or sorbet and we would have champagne to drink
written by graciekae, April 08, 2010
i'll also stick a those giant candle holders (i forgot the name) that go in the ground to keep bugs away AND so theres enough light to play games after dinner. and just scatter some around like this
if it was a lunch party, i would have really colorful centerpieces (LOVE the color arrangement of the ones you posted) but for dinner, i would just have white calla lillies . first i would start off with salmon canapes. they look like this:
or a light pear and pecan salad. and beside them, i would have tons of these votives.
then maybe macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi with mushrooms or a mexican rice dish (i can't remember them name of that either! usually has shrimp though) and for dessert, sorbet! pineapple or mango sorbet with fresh fruit on the side. i'd also have tons of fruity drinks with yummy fruit inside. that way, the guys don't have to be too embarrassed to order a fruity drink at a bar or something, lol.
i'd have the whole thing low to the ground so the light from the candles everywhere would be more vibrant. and if not at my future dream house, maybe my future apartment way up high in new york. that way, we'll be closer to the stars/moon and it'll be a peaceful break from the hustle of newyork. =D
love you taylor!!!

We would have pina coladas and feast on fish and coconuts, tropical fruits. It sounds so incredibly relaxing to lay on the beach and enjoy the sounds of the sea, and some local music playing in the distance.
written by Qinnie, April 08, 2010
I would have a long table, covered with a chiffon-like table cloth and with little bouquets of daisies lining up the middle of the table.. from the start all the way to the end of it with rose petals scattered all over. And I'll have beautiful french styled chairs with huge satin cloths tied around it with a big bow! Uh. starting to sound like a wedding right? Ok. Back to the party. Instead of a huge band, I hired my friend who happens to be a pretty famous cellist right here in my hometown and have him play pieces of music
And also, non-scented candles in pretty frosted glass candle holders will be lighted up. Non-scented cos I wouldn't want it to mask the natural scent of the forest, the soil and flowers. Everyone is to dress up in something light, a bit flowy/flowery for the ladies. I'll serve champagnes, ice wines, loads of cakes, pasta/chicken/fruits salad, pastries and bite sized sandwiches! I love tiramisu so that's definitely on the list, and so will apple cake, banana chocolate muffins and many others! The aim is to have everyone close gathered around with good lighthearted food and simple music to get us all talking and catching up and dancing.
written by ErinM, April 08, 2010
For dinner I'll serve grilled Mahi-Mahi with avocado-melon salsa and a cucumber salad, and for desert grilled pineapple with brown sugar, coconut and rum served with homemade mai tai sorbet.
My signature cocktail for the evening will either be a champagne-lemonade, or a cucumber vodka with soda.
Once it is completely dark, I will drape a sheet from across the side of the house and use a projector to watch a classic movie (I'm thinking Breakfast at Tiffany's or Casablanca) outside under the stars. I want to recover some old camping mattresses in fabric and throw them down with large pillows for people to sit on.

It will be held at the Ice Hotel in Sweden. The walls, fixtures, and fittings are made entirely of ice and it is extremely unique because construction can only take place in sub-freezing temperatures.
At my dinner party, guests will be treated to goodie bags that contain Ballet Slippers and Lip Lock so that they can achieve an ice-queen look that echoes the cool environment. On the dinner menu will be lots of sashimi and various raw food. Because of the cold weather, they will be extremely fresh and delicious.

If I were to have a dinner party, I would totally love to have it at the gardens of the Pen Ryn mansion, overlooking the Delaware river. The mansion was built in the late 1700s.
On the menu, totally love organic salads, bruschetta and dark berries with yogurt (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries). For main entree: some grilled salmon with balsamic vinegarette and caramelized onions, and kebabs with pineapple and peppers. For dessert, you gotta have cake--devils food cake or my new fave--lemon loaf cake with glaze..ummmm.

I would want a backyard party at night with the pool covered like that but lit up so we could dance on the water, on the top of the pool would be hundreds of floating candles and floating flowers, There would be a flowy white tent with dinner tables lit up by candles and thousands of twinkling lights in the tent and in the surrounding trees.
For the entree I would serve a grilled tilapia with rice pilaf, champagne galore, and grilled squash, grilled eggplant and artichokes with butter and for desert Tiramisu and and coffee.
Okay now I am hungry and want to throw a party!

The practical me was thinking in a supermarket that way if you would have so much choice of food available when you needed it
But i thought an awesome idea for a party would be something that would be unforgettable experience, and spectucular. Therefore, my party would be in disneyland. we would have the place to ourselves, there are so many fun activities to do, so it would be the ideal location.
we would indulge in pizza, chips, chocolates, crisps, just all the food which we would enjoy without worrying about the calories because it is dream party
just seeing everyone happy, smiling, having a wild of a time, that is what you call a fabulous party.

...just brings back so many childhood memories..
Lose your belongings, crash into other people and drown yourself between a thousand balls while you struggle to find the surface of that colourful sea...how not to love it?
After a fun and exhausting dip in the ball pit some food would be essencial to recover energy, so mexican food would be my choice (so not healthy but who cares, I guess I can allow myself a little whim for my birthday). Tacos, burritos and quesadillas, I would have them all.
Then for dessert I would love several varieties of cheesecake...especially with wild berries.
As regards drinks, my bar wouldn't be complete without all kinds of tropical cocktails and margaritas..so good!
To close up the night I would have J. Cole singing for me (if only that were possible)
So embarrased to admit it but I've been having this major crush on him for the past few weeks so he would be the perfect cherry on top of my party

who has stayed there? what has been done in this room? (okay sometimes I dont want to know that...)
We would have a catered spread of my favorite foods and deserts, and a dance floor and we could have a discotheque and dance the night away everyone I know would come and only my favorite songs would be played!
That sounds like a great birthday to me!

For food, we would have tea and cucumber sandwiches, chicken salad on croissants crumpets, oh and dont forget the lemon curd.
We would have teas from all over the world and of course the finest coffee and just enjoy being a family.
written by socaligurl, April 12, 2010
We would drink mixed drinks like pina coladas (my favorite)
I dont eat meat so we would certainly not be doing the roasted pig (uh... ew)
but a light tropical salad full of fruits and veggies and coconut cake for desert.
I think I have a thing for coconuts...
