It's no secret that I live for Chanel - I've loved the timeless design house for as long as I can remember.
I saw this video of a ballerina performing in the Chanel Couture Salon and thought it was amazing.
To me, Chanel has always represented a combination of elegance and modern refinement. It's a true luxury brand that's always thinking ahead.
What can I say.. Chanel is just amazing. Coco was amazing. Lagerfeld's amazing.
When I look at old photos of Coco, I am in awe of her visionary style.

Needless to say, Karl Lagerfeld is a genius, a complete and total living legend.

My love affair with Chanel began when I would wear my mom's handbags when I was like 5 years old.
This is what I like to call my "office bag."
I use this bag every day for work..I use it to carry my laptop, folders for various projects I'm working on, water, you name it. I've had it for years, and couldn't imagine my life without it.
I love that Coco's favorite color was black, and she became known for using black and white. Her designs were so sophisticated and timeless..one of my favorite things about Chanel is all the detail.
Take the buttons on a classic Chanel coat, for example. Chanel's buttons have been everything from little flowers and the little "CC" logo to a clover and a little mini tweed jacket.
These are my favorite pair of Chanel shoes that I own - how incredible is the bow in the back.
For the latest Fall presentation, Karl took it to the next level with his designs. The looks below really spoke to be and inspired me!

Ice queen to the max.
I love what the makeup artists did here, too. The dramatic panda eye and nude lip - all you'd need to recreate this is Carina's Black Eyeliner, Sweet Woodruff eye shadow, and Natural lip color.

I find myself constantly flipping through the Chanel coffee table books that I have, and when doing some research for this blog, I came across this quote from Coco that I had to share with you.
"Black comprises everything. So does white. They possess absolute beauty. They are in perfect harmony." - Coco Chanel
Love that.
A book of notes that Coco Chanel wrote is one of my greatest treasures.
I'm also obsessed with my Jacques Helleu and Chanel book. Here is a page from it:
Kate looks out of this world gorgeous here.
Check out this photo of Karl adorned by his army of models that I have on my inspiration board!
How cool does my assistant look in a great tweed Chanel jacket?
One of my favorite Chanel ad campaigns of all-time was the commercial featuring Nicole Kidman and directed by Baz Luhrmann, who also directed Nicole in "Moulin Rouge."
The story that the commercial told was so achingly beautiful.
As exquisitely represented by the commercial, Chanel is just decadent, yet so fun!
One of my favorite ways to Chanel is pairing a tweed jacket with a classic pair of pearls, and edging it out with a pair of leather pants and ankle boots.
Without a doubt, Chanel will always have a special place in my heart.
FUN TASK:
Now that I've declared my undying love for Chanel, I'd love to hear what design house is your all-time fav, and just for fun, what direction you would take the brand if you were to step in as head designer?
I am going to send my favorite Jacques Helleu and Chanel book to two of my favorites, along with Black Eyeliner, Sweet Woodruff eyeshadow and Natural lip color.

She was a draping and fabric molding genius and an expert at creating grecian goddess gowns like these:
Who wouldn't want to look like an ethereal grecian goddess with a gown by one of the last haute couture female designers of her time?
Today, if I were head designer of the brand, I would take it to the next level along the vein of Sophia Kokosalaki. More black, grecian goddess/gothic/rocker separates with shorter more youthful hemlines like this:
Enjoy,
Monica

If i were their head designer though, i would make the collections that are sold in department stores a little less tacky. Because although the runway shows are amazing, their clothes in deparment stores are not always a sign of great taste. And that's a shame, because it is those clothes that the big public sees.
So i would bring more runway in their other collections.

I love how Marc continually re-invents himself and offers diffusions of his line- ranging from MBMJ condoms to LV!
and I adore Jeremy Scott for going all out in terms of presentation. I like how he fully commits to a theme and executes it perfectly-always edgy, fun and colorful! I also enjoy how he takes aspects of popular art and makes them wearable in a playful way.
If I could put a twist on Jeremy Scott's line, I'd definitely incorporate a theme based on Raggedy Ann and Andy:
I can just imagine tons of stringy red hair, plaid prints, buttons and striped leggings.

Or in Henry's words:
"j’associais aussi l’univers de Carven à une odeur, un parfum aux notes hyperfraîches...ce qui rappelle un peu l’esprit de la couture" ... I also associated the universe of Carven with a scent, a perfume with the freshest notes.... reminiscent of the spirit of couture

Check out these beautiful gowns from the 2008 Armani Prive show:
I also love that they experiment with bold colors - it makes their gowns that much more stunning and traffic-stopping (Zhang Ziyi in incredible chartreuse dress):
Armani's also responsible for this crazy piece of beauty, on Lady Gaga at the 2010 Grammys:
If I could, I'd try to make their gowns a little bit more gritty, with darker, plush fabrics, accessories, and more partnerships with artists like Lady Gaga and Madonna. I'd be very inspired by Alexander McQueen's style and pay tribute to his genius.
Taylor, you've also inspired me to pull out my RayBan Wayfarers - I love them now!

Some of my favourite looks from the S/S 2008 show:
I have the entire show (and every show since then!) catalogued on my computer because they are so inspirational to me and simply beautiful to look at!
I love that Lanvin make wedding dresses and my dream would be to wear one of their gowns to my own wedding! I recently purchased this wedding scrapbook with Alber Elbaz's iconic drawings to keep all my inspirations in one place!
I'm obsessed with the whimsical sketches that adorn t-shirts, bags, stationary, stamps and umbrellas! I would love to own them all!
For my birthday this year, my family bought me the "Jeanne" Lanvin perfume which I wear every single day as my signature scent! I can't wait to try this new limited edition version of it:
If I were to step in as head designer, I would create a couture children's line, in a nod to the history of the house and how Jeanne Lanvin started by making stunning creations for her daughter. I think it would be fun to make that kind of tribute to the house. As a name for the collection I was thinking about 'Little Lanvin' - which I think sounds cute!
I also love how Alber Elbaz paired with an unexpected brand like Acne to create crazy cool pieces in denim. I would want to continue that by perhaps creating an affordable diffusion line - like Karl Lagerfeld did with H&M or even more recently, with his Coco Cocoon handbags. I know I would love to own as many Lanvin pieces as possible so the more affordable, the better!
Finally, to expand on the Lanvin perfumes I would so love to create a Lanvin make-up line! Every season I am so enamored with the models' make-up looks, I think it would be a great idea for the company to have their own beauty line. I would LOVE to recreate this look for a night out with real Lanvin eyeliner & lipstick, I think it would be so luxurious and elegant:
Thanks for letting me share my love affair, Taylor! I always enjoy reading your posts!!!

Seriously, I would love to do a new take on the tweed, maybe find some fabulous fabric color artist that could do something new and amazing with it, a colorpath never seen before. Because when I think Chanel, I think tweed!

Oscar De La Renta is flawless. His designs are amazing and never fail to do anything less than to make me totally and utterly want to be in them. To even meet him would be a fairytale. Such amazing work. Honestly not anything i would want to change about his designs, but to be head designer and just to be in the presence of such amazing talent..oh, i cannot even begin to explain. The perfect description, in his own words, of his style...
"We're dealing with sophisticated customers. What's most important to these women is individuality. I have to create things she'll want to wear, no matter who she is."

I love that Chanel is known for being chic and classy and can instantly glam up any casual look. It puts the chic in my boho. You don't have to be all dressed up in a gown and on the red carpet to enjoy Chanel. You don't have to be at some star awards in some crazy Lady-Gaga-esque makeup to get away with Chanel. Because Chanel is so understated, you can put touches of it in your life on a daily basis, be it with jeans or black tights, a la Nicole Richie.
As well, who can forget the incredible Chanel tattoos "Les Trompe L'oeil" and the nail polish Chanel Jade that was sold out everywhere (which i couldn't get my hands on)?
Where the fashion house lags is probably in the jewellery business. Bolder statement pieces are needed. The classy logo needs to stand out more. Perhaps even the doves from the tattoos can make an appearance. Or even the Bird of Paradise that featured in its holiday 2009 range.

In what direction would I take the brand? I LOVE Coco Chanel sooooo much. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't mean that there shouldn't be changes; every brand should evolve in a way appropriate to its own aesthetic. But I think the basic foundation that has worked for so long should be maintained. Less celebrity endorsement. I'm not against it at all, but I would like people who have demonstrated longevity and elegance in their careers--after all, they're representing Chanel! For example, the Nicole Kidman ad you mentioned is STILL amazing years after it first aired. And of course we can't forget the amazing Marilyn Monroe photo that launched the No. 5 perfume into the stratosphere.
My mom still wears No. 5. I'd definitely use women of substance as brand ambassadors. Like you, I also carry a Chanel bag every day. It's a little beat up, worn over the years, but it's still perfect for me because it fits EVERYTHING and looks amazing even if it's no longer flawless (builds character, right?). To me, that's Chanel. Whenever I buy a Chanel piece, I know that I'll keep it forever. A lot of trends come and go. Some bags you buy look dated after a while. Not Chanel. Even my mom has some Chanel items she's had forever! I even wear some of the stuff she wore when she was in her 20s. To me, it speaks VOLUMES of the brand that I can wear any Chanel item she has and still look "today." I can't say that for all brands. I can throw on Chanel earrings, a scarf, a blazer, trousers (all older than I am) without looking ridiculous. I just love how each piece really is an investment piece. I'd rather have a few Chanel items than a bunch of trendy things because I know the Chanel will last. Every piece is so wearable and understated (in a good way) so you don't feel like the clothes are wearing you. With some luxury brands, I feel that sometimes they can "broadcast" too much so you're sort of the brand's mannequin. But for me, Chanel is the exact opposite. Even though Chanel is so well-known and luxurious, I feel that the brand whispers rather than shouts. The brand's purpose isn't to toot its own horn; it's to help you toot yours by making the wearer feel ladylike and confident. I love how Coco Chanel said, "Look for the woman in the dress. If there is no woman, there is no dress."
So if I magically took over, I'd make sure the fashion house continues in that vein. Simple elegance. You can't beat that with a stick!
Unlike trends, which don't match everyone, Chanel is perfect for every man or woman. Remember that episode of THE SIMPSONS when Marge found a vintage Chanel suit in a secondhand store? She wore it and owned it! That's Chanel. I encourage many to read up on Coco Chanel. Her life had a lot of difficulties, intrigue, disappointments, and success. No matter what one thinks about her personal life, her wit and capacity to work her hands to the bone are admirable. I am not a fan of Chanel doing a diffusion line because I don't think that's what Chanel is about. Chanel cannot be diffused; it is like the walls of a house, the very foundation, and it has to be as it is. Chanel is great because whether you pair one of their pieces with another equally expensive piece or a $15 skirt, it works. One of my friends rocks a vintage Chanel blazer with her American Apparel basics. Another, whose style is more hippie-ish, pairs her Chanel purse with her favorite $10 dresses she got from Morocco. Another friend loves head-to-toe Chanel, and it works for her, too.
The brand is perfection to me because it invades our lives without diminishing our individual signature. As Coco Chanel herself said (I must quote her again!), "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

My favorite designer would have to be Marc Jacobs and that is because not only does he make amazing clothes for his own brand but he is the visionary behind Louis Vuitton.
Marc Jacobs is a wonderful designer. I love myself a bit of couture any day but his clothing and accessories are all such amazing little treasures.
The first time I laid my eyes on an actual Marc Jacobs garment, I knew I was in love. It was a jacket at Bloomingdales and even though I almost got in trouble trying to try it on (because the alarm went off. haha.)
i tried it on and it was the perfect match. The jacket made me feel so good.
To me the thing that is more important isn't just something beautiful, but something beautiful that also makes you feel good as well. It is because of this that Marc Jacobs is one of my biggest inspirations.
If I were to take over the company I think that I would try to maintain the quality of work that is being put out at present but there would most definitely be an bigger expansion of all aspects of the brand from more clothes for men and accessories, perfumes, couture, etc. I think it would also be amazing if there could be a program where if you buy a garment then the same garment would go to someone who needs it because there are tons of people who are less fortunate and might need something to make them feel good.

However, if Viktor & Rolf gave me their blessing, designing for them would be a dream come true. I love how each of their collections is so innovative, the concepts are so well thought out, and the branding makes the items even more covetable. From their website to their old boutique in Milan, every aspect of the label is breath-taking.
If I was to run the label, I would continue their tradition of creating quirky, beautiful clothing and keep their unusual catwalk presentations. I would support the concept-heavy collections as I believe this is why their garments are so interesting. I would re-open the upsidedown boutique in Milan, and make their label available in Australia!
Thank you for the blog, Taylor. I loved this post.

He creates something brilliant original, always creative and inspiring!
Elegance and Simplicity. The look of Armani is the best all the time.
Is not something banal, never banal!
Armani woman knows what elegance means. She's confident, sometimes a little bit shy, but classic and elegant in every little move.
The style, the material, the work... Armani is synonym of Perfect Beauty!

I would also like to add Stella McCartney as one of the most innovative and stylish modern fashion houses in existence. She is able to marry the versatility and elegance of Chanel with the playfulness of DVF. She speaks to the woman who is intelligent, sophisticated and ladylike, but who will assert herself when needed and can kick back with the boys anytime. Her pieces are sure to be timeless classics so everyone should invest now!

This is what a young creative and eccentric algerian boy said one time..
This is man who did invent chic ready to wear with his famous “Rive Gauche” and who dared call his fragrance “Opium”, the embodiment of aloofness and éternel chic parisien, and the modern “couture” silhouette, the “it” one now in the streets. Just to remember you with a clever quote from Mr. Pierre Bergé (the man who YSL opens the fashion house with) when asked if fashion was an art, he wisely answered : “yes, if the designer is an artist himself!”. God knows Yves Saint Laurent was a true artist for decades and not another fashion flub designer, just raid into the chic women of this world closets & have a check!! Personally, I grew up with my French mother, who loved fashion, reminding me often that Saint Laurent was the greatest fashion couturier of our time, in diffenrent way of . I’m lucky to have some of her clothes designed by him in the 60’s and 70’s. Like the super famous Mondrian shift and especially the blazers (my no secret passion)! I really adore to wear, and mix & match them in my daily outfit with a blouse, flat shoes or high heels it depends and naturally a pair vintage sunglasses (wayfayrer or my new obsession butterflly's shape vintage 70's sunglasses) and sometimes wearing a Borsalino hat!!
I love clothing glamourized for women like some items taken from the male wardrobe, such as the blazer, the tuxedo, the pant suit, the leather jacket, trench and sahariana also..and YSL knows it better then anyone and most important thing one step before the others!
It could’ve all been a powerful idea, women’s liberation that is, and a way to openly express it, because it was then one step closer to equality for everyone. Yves Saint Laurent to me, proved the power of fashion to express bigger ideas, to reflect on the changes in society, to not be afraid of it, and proved in the process that fashion does and can matter in substantive ways. And now in our times, how often does that happen?
I remember when he died Suzy Menkes just wrote: he not only broke the mold, he remade it. That is. Exactly It. A master of style. Timeless.
Today I still appreciate YSL house creations but I also everytime look with an interested eye to the collections of two of this generation best designers, imho: Alber Elbaz of Lanvin and of course Nicolas Ghesquiere of Balenciaga. His Fall 07 and the prep school blazers (yes, again blazers, i'm obsessed with ahah) and khaki jodhpurs that after were copied left and right is a masterpiece.
I'm such a strange person, I love terribly opposites. And I like to mash up.
Geometric, Linear vs. irregular, eccentric or androgynous vs iper-feminine look.
That's why for example, is so interesting to see how a feminine and elegant collection such as last fall season (where it was an clear influence by YSL, which it's obviously not the same maybe a personal reinvented one), and this urban warrior of this season can still both be so Balenciaga. When you know that two seemingly distinct come from the same design mind, something fabulous and amazing is happening to me. That’s how it should be. How extreme can you go at different ends of the fashion spectrum while keeping the integrity, the connecting thread, intact.
Fashion which i'm inspired to is research, experimentation, architectural also, but always so strong. That's what I like and if I supposed to be a head designer I'll do just that.

My mom used to be a semi-famous actress in Korea but it all went downhill after she met my jerk of a father. Long story short, my mother's wealth was stolen, her home was robbed (even her childhood pictures were stolen all in broad daylight. The neighbors just thought my mom was moving!), and since as long as I can remember, we've been sharing a small apartment with my grandmother and use coupons like its nobody's business. The only things my mom were left with were literally the things on her back. She had one change of clothes, a pair of ferragamo heels, and her classic Chanel flap bag. She still has those items to this day. Several times in our lives, we were so low on cash (my mother also has Polio on the right side of her body so its hard for her to find a job that doesn't aggravate it) that my mother came close to selling those items but she never did. When I was older, I finally asked why she never did it and she said its because she wanted them to serve as a reminder for her and myself to not give up. I know it sounds ridiculous to not give up such expensive things in times of need but what they meant to us held more value. So those nights when we were out of food stamps or sitting by candlelight to reduce our electric bill, I would be reminded that things won't always be like this. That one day, I would be able to give back the life my mom lost.
ANYWAYS! If I were to step in as Head designer, I would try and remind people what Chanel was known for. Even though I think Karl Lagerfeld is amazing and timeless, there are lots of people saying that he's losing his touch. So what I would do is study Coco Chanel's original collections, her style, her elegance and remind people that Chanel is THE brand of all brands. Chanel is responsible for the little black dress (during a time when black was just associated for mourning!), Chanel No5, bell bottoms (haha), the TIMELESS Chanel tweed jackets/suits, the collarless jacket- basically for turning practical items to classics that have stood the test of time. I would also show the collection in a crazy venue just like Karl always does. I love that he takes things to the next level and his imagination is outSIDE of the box. BUT we are in a recession so I think it would be lovely to remind people of Coco Chanel's work and take a more simpler approach.
