MOVING DAY!

MD_IMG_6807

Moving is something I do way too often, but yet again I find myself relocating into a new pad. Who wants to help me move?

I wonder if FedEx would let me deliver myself in that photo above...maybe I’d have to call a courier?

The first step of moving is the dreaded packing process. I groan just thinking about it, but the key is staying organized. Label your boxes so that you can clearly recognize what room the contents belong in. Or take a cue from my handbook and label each box according to designer: all of my Chanel bags in one box!

MD_chanel-box

Once you’re packed..it’s time to move it out. Whether you’re hiring a moving service or having your friends give you a hand, moving is always stressful. After everything has been moved into your new spot, start doing inventory. What goes where? Arrange your boxes by room and go from there.

On my first night in my new place, all I had was a comforter and a parka to sleep in!

MD_IMG01391-20100802-0003

My best friend slept over to keep me company..you know a true friend when they’re willing to sleep on the floor with you!

As I let you know in my Style For The Home blog, making sure I have a cool design at home is crucial. I’m still into keeping my color scheme black, white, dove grey and plum..and bold patterns like stripes and florals will definitely play a big part in my design process.

As you know, I am obsessed with anything that interior design extraordinaire Kelly Wearstler does..using these photos of spaces she’s worked on as inspiration.

Love wallpaper!!

A new location can completely revitalize your life, and bring you a new outlook, new neighbors, or even a new sense of style. I’m planning on converting one bedroom in my new place into a home office - I feel soo grown-up!!

Now I have to get back to unpacking..this move has been quite intense. This week’s blog is short and sweet..hope you enjoyed it. I’ve just been so hectic dealing with my new spot and being on set for 14 hour days!

FUN TASK:

What is the most memorable place you’ve lived? Was it a crammed one-bedroom apartment, a sorority house, or your first home with your partner? I love story time..

A few of my fav stories are going to get Carina’s new Art Girl eye shadow and Hue by Kelly Wearstler.

My most memory place was this run down shack like place in Europe. smilies/smiley.gif My friends had just moved in, and I had a summer free, so I thought, why not? We all slept in sleeping bags and big futons for a while, but we eventually fixed it all up to make it more like home. There was a street full of great hole in the wall restaurants and bars nearby, so you could wake up, walk a few yards, and say hi to all the people setting up for the day. So much fun! It was a cramped place, ONE bathroom, but it had a few pieces of old furniture that had a lot of charm (an a few dusty framed pics someone left behind...it was sort of creepy). There were a ton of artists in the area, so you'd end up meeting a lot of sculptors, painters, metal workers, etc., who had showings outside and indoors. Although it's not a place I'd love to live in forever, it was great for a while. smilies/smiley.gif Good luck with your move!

I love moving, as much as a pain it is it is so much fun to start fresh and change things up a little. I love seeing how all of your belongings look when you put them in that perfect spot smilies/smiley.gif I think it really does make the move worth it.

My favorite place is the place I live in now. It makes it so easy for potty training lol. My little one does not have to walk up and down stairs to go potty woohoo

My first apartment in college. I decided to move in with an old friend from high school. We lived in a little two bedroom apartment walking distance to work, school, and play smilies/grin.gif

We had an amazing two years there experiencing college! We would walk to kareoke night every week, have wine nights, watch tv on a television the size of my palm, and of course we had a lot of study sessions.

Unfortunately, it's mostly memorable because of a flood that disrupted our fun. We had to live in this little apartment while carpet was being replaced and everything was being redone. We slept on the corners of beds that were covered in our things, trying to stay dry. It was miserable. But her and I experienced it together and always had each other's shoulder to lean on.

I miss her dearly and don't know if I could ever have another roommate after our amazing time in that tiny apartment!

The most memorable place has to be the first place my boyfriend and I bought. It was a condo that we won at a home auction after the previous owners let it go into foreclosure. Needless to say it needed A LOT of work! We decided that we were clever enough to do all the work ourselves. We ripped up every inch of floor, knocked down walls, put new ones up, and remodeled the kitchen and both bathrooms! Our "dinner table was an empty box and we sat on upside down paint cans. My boyfriend did all the electrical and plumbing work ourselves too. When we flushed the toilet all the water leaked out of the bottom. When we turned on the garbage disposal the lights went off in the kitchen. When you turned on the kettle to boil water the fridge would turn off. And finally, without rhyme or reason, all the power in the place would suddenly turn off except for in the bedroom. After much persuasion on my part, he realized something was wrong and let me call an electrician. We finished everything in about 7 months and had managed to turn it into the happiest and coziest place either of us had ever lived in! smilies/smiley.gif
Tents and flood
written by Alexandra Negoda, August 03, 2010
My story took place somewhere in 2000-2001. At that time I was deeply in love with my first boyfriend. I was 17 and he was 20. We did not have enough money (I was still at the school and he was a student at that time) but desperately wanted to spend the summer together and alone (You know). So we took tents, some food, gas burner and went camping to the Azov Sea (Europe, Ukraine) for three (OMGsmilies/grin.gif) weeks. Of course it was the best time of my life, we have no place to take the shower, to wash our hands...Just sea and LOVE. and love, love, love.
BUT several days later it began to rain, it was raining for nearly the week, and we were not able to leave that place as our parents should had come later with the car to take us home and at that time we did not have the mobiles. So, our sleeping bags were floating in the water, everything was wet, pillows, clothes, food etc. It was terrible. The tent we have been living in I will remember for all my life. It was the worst and the best at the same time place to live in.
Now, when I am 25, I am thinking about these times with a smile, now I am not able to repeat such a heroic deed, but at that time I was ready to follow my belowed men to the ends of the earth.smilies/grin.gif Heh, such a story...

I'd say the one place that I will always remember and think back upon is my very first place with my husband. We were both newly graduated college kids just starting out. We got married and moved out of our secure homes with our parents. It was scary and exciting at the same time to think that we would finally have a place to call our own.

We rented a one bedroom apartment. I loved that it had a laundry room inside the apartment instead of lugging our laundry to a common laundry area. The apartment was tiny but I like to call it "cozy".

We lived there for a couple of years before we were able to save up for a single family house. It was a great apartment!

I shared a 2bedroom apt with my cousin and friend, (sharing a room with said friend) it was tight space, but SO fun and we were in a sweet spot at the Avalon right in Downtown Burbank!!
AMAZINGLY......I am moving back next week smilies/smiley.gif not in the same spot, but into a condo with my cousin + this time I'll have my own room...sweet! I have to say the first time I moved to big cities really shocked me! I used to live at country side, but city life is quite different from country side. You'll enjoy more relax and easygoing life in country side than busy life in the cities!

my first apartment
written by rosiemila, August 03, 2010
I LOVED moving in with my boyfriend of eight years. We are living only five minutes away from our home town, we are 21 so we kind of still need them at times, for laundry etc. I remember the first time i saw the wood floors freshly waxed and bare walls I could paint and go crazy on. I love decals so they are all over, tastefully of course. Also being a recessionista going to target (liberty by london) chairs are amazing at my dining room table. black and white bedding. such a good, and cheap idea for a cool decorating idea:
i bought four 6x6in thin mirrors (squares) *ikea* placed them all in a line vertically, and took floral black decals and stuck them across all of the mirrors. I love it!

the best thing was really was finding out who ur friends r, who will help you move boxes and boxes full of clothes, shoes, bags and everything in between!!

my favorite place was this gem i found when i moved back to LA after high school and a short stint in arizona for college (my family moved us away right before i started 9th grade. the humanity!). it was on olympic right next to little ethiopia and it was the cutest place ever. SUCH a find. it had 2 bedrooms and 2 baths (one was teeny tiny and located in the kitchen, which had awesome checkerboard tiles) the building was super cute light yellow on the outside with only 4 units. everything about it was wonderful. the locations, building, neighbors, price, landlord. i think i might have been the luckiest 20 year old ever. i had no idea what i was doing and have no idea how i was able to find such a steal.

i can't believe i ever gave the place up!

I adore Kelly Wearstler's style. My most memorable place was our first real house. It was over 100 years old and bank owned, we got it for a steal. The neighbors greeted us warmly right away, they were so happy to see someone in it-I felt like I had timewarped to Mayberry,USA!I discovered how not to carpet a stairway, how not to match wall colors, and how not to strip wood. I also learned to love Eastlake style, how to arrange furniture, set up a kitchen so it was efficient-so many lessons and mistakes in that house, but I would give anything to be back in it. We had to move otherwise I would have grown old in it.

That Apartment in Taiwan with the Awful Landlady
written by Rosalind L., August 03, 2010
Okay, this post could not have come at a better time because I move in a week and I FEEL YOUR PAIN. I'm in the packing process and I hate it.

I loved my apartment in Taiwan. Yes, the landlady was awful and left smokestains on the wall when I moved in and then stole my computer which I couldn't do anything about because I spoke Chinese. But it was the first place that was really mine, with no roommates, furniture I had picked out, floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Loop Road (the main road in the town I was in), and it was over the best breakfast place I have ever been to.

Despite landlady madness, I hated leaving that place.
Paris
written by Kristen C, August 04, 2010
The most memorable place I lived was dorm in the 13e while studying in Paris. It was in the ghetto but I didn't care because I was so happy to just be living and going to school in Paris. Come to think of it, it wasn't the dorm itself that was memorable because I was only used it when I needed to sleep. When not in class I was lucky enough to spend my time wandering the street, going to museums, or reading in one of the many parks. I still can't believe that was almost 10 years ago. I have fond memories and remember it as if it were yesterday. Also, to anyone reading who's still in college, take advantage of study abroad programs.

Cheers and have a great week.
Seattle, WA to Fair Oaks Ranch, TX

My most memorable move was in 2004 when I got a promotion at work. I drug my hubby and son to TX (just outside San Antonio), after our decision that immersion in a completely different culture was an opportunity we couldn't pass up. Getting to buy my dream house with a pool just topped off the whole move!
small spaces
written by Gina Castro , August 04, 2010
Hi Tay, I love the inspiration of wall paper and colors to inspire you for your new abode, especially that splash of pink. My most cramped and memorable living space is the one I am living in right now. It was a challenge to find a home that could house not only me but my big pups. I did find one but smaller and in a less than desirable side of town but it had a yard for the doggies. I still wasn't completely sold, until my mother assured me, "with your beautiful big furnishings it will be a lovely home." Here I am 8 years later and have definitely adapted the "less is more," attitude and couldn't be happier.

I JUST got (meaning rented) my first house about 2 months ago.. along with 3 other roommates. I'm going to be a 3rd year at college and we got hooked up by one of our roomies because her boss (she works as a swim instructor as the school) was looking to rent out her condo. It's a condo with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. I share the master bedroom with my friend and we actually kinda love it. We decorated our bedroom with Christmas lights at the top (tacky in the best way possible) and there's even 2 closets! I love coming here.. my 2nd home away from home. Something a lot of people like about our house is that there are painted walls. The living room has red walls, my bedroom has mint green walls, another bedroom has blue walls.. I like not looking at white walls all the time. It feels so home-y already. It gets a little cold at night but my roomie and I decided no one uses the heater during summer so we just layer up.

Even though that's my official first house that I live in besides with my family, my most memorable house will be in Florida where I was born (but California lovin' forever). It was a huge one-story house but with high ceilings and a marble kitchen top. It had the hugest backyard ever. Really, it was shared space because it was behind a bunch of other houses but in a circle formation? It even had a small lake down there. Next door, there was an extension to the house with a pool and gym equipment with a little dog who always barked at me whenever I went outside. It was the most beautiful house ever, to me.

the most memorable place that i lived was in florence when i went to art school one summer. our apartment was on the top floor of an old building, precisely 96 steps up a spiral staircase to the top (no elevator of course!) i had buns of steel when i moved home! there were six of us girls in this apartment and only one bathroom! every few days we would see the old lady who lived below us on her hands and knees scrubbing the concrete stairs with a brush! from my window i had a perfect view of the san lorenzo dome (a smaller version of the duomo). a few steps away was a huge indoor market, where it was row after row of fresh italian meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables. it was amazing. we also made friends with the owner of the nearby gelato shop (probably because we were in there every single day!!) and he let us come by one night when the shop was closed and showed us how the gelato was made. every day was a new experience and it was the most memorable summer of my life!
Costa Rica
written by Leigh B., August 04, 2010
The most memorable place I've lived was an extended stay hotel room I shared with a roommate while working with a volunteer group in Costa Rica. There was a huge window in our shower that was overlooked by a house on the hill above us - their dining room windows looked right into our bathroom! Having a curious dog or monkey poke their heads in through the window whenever it was open was another memorable aspect of living there. We also soon learned that the some of the hotel staff members brought their kids to work, and they had fun by swapping items from one guest's room to another - we were so confused when we ended up with five pairs of men's socks and an extra toiletry kit. Apparently my roommate offended the staff when she complained about the children, because after that my towels were always folded into elaborate designs on my pillow while hers were tossed unfolded over the footboard of her bed. Between the staff, the visiting animals, and the bugs, it was an... interesting experience, but the work we did was incredible and it was an amazing way to learn about another culture and make great friends.

Tay -- so glad you are moving on and up. From everything I've heard, it seems you got a raw deal. It is really unprofessional for RZP to be making the claims they are on their show, even if they believe they are true.

I will probably be reincarnated as a Mover in my next life. In my current city, I have moved 6 times in 2 1/2 years, mostly due to me being totally unfamiliar with the city and - I admit it - some dodgy choices on my part. I am happy to report that I am finally settled, but it wasn't without some bigtime moving adventures. And, that doesn't mean I didn't live in some questionable places..."memorable" doesn't mean "favorite", right?

My first place in this city was what I called My Hobbit Hole. It was a basement apartment (never again), but was newly renovated and clean. It had one half window, which meant I pretty much had S.A.D. all year. Not only was I living in darkness, none of my friends would come visit because the ceiling was about 5'6" high. I am 5'1" and I could do cartwheels in the place! But none of my friends fit, so I never had company. And I was pretty much an exterminator because I had surprise roommates in the form of spiders (big, small, creeepy, crawly) and centipedes (these buggers move fast!). I sometimes worked the night shifts and got home at 8am, but my upstairs neighbor loved to play Celine Dion at 9am or some strange instrumental mix that I dubbed Exotic Porn on his boombox. I don't think I had a decent night's sleep in that house. Best part ever though - my landlord installed a coin laundry/dryer machine that magically did not take my quarters, yet still washed and dried my clothes. That was the only highlight of this forsaken place.

I will never look for a place to live in desperation again. Everything - much like dating - looks good when you're desperate.
Toronto house
written by Paula Wolf, August 04, 2010
When I was little my dad got a job in Toronto at the RBC bank so we all had to get up and move from Boston. I think I cried for days, anyway we only had like a month or so to find a house (there weren't very many in good locations) so we ended up moving into this weird like Chinese/some Japanese inspired house. I know it seems like that would be cool right? No this guy put in pink, brown and gray sinks and tubs in the bathrooms. There were mirrors everywhere(like covering all the walls in the bedrooms and hallways) black granite tile floors (my parents room had a black granite stage). there was like a sauna in the room that me and my sister used as like a playroom. So strange, and then there was a nice japanese garden in the back, but I was too young to appreciate it and I was little so all I wanted was a place to throw a frisbee or play tag, so not ideal. We didn't change anything because we thought we would not be in canada long and that was true we were only there for 2 years. The family after us tore it up though. Anyways yeah that is the most memorable place I have lived, but i'm still young so you never know...

My most memorable place is the place I live now. Not for me living in it now. But for what it stood for when I was growing up. I live with my grandparents, in the same room that my mom grew up in. It was the first room that I got to decorate and keep things the way i wanted. Also I have only been living here for a year and a half, but it has become my sanctuary. But when I was growing up (especially in my teens), this house would be my safe haven. My parents got a divorce when I was 12 and they each married different people soon afterwards. My grandparents house was the one place that didn't change. I could go along with my chaotic life, but always know that that house will be the same no matter what. Also during christmas time, it is not christmas until the house is decorated and smells like the holidays. It is the best feeling in the world to me. To feel safe, love and family.

Cozy little 3 bedroom houses to mansions with 3 spoiled, rude obnoxious teenagers who are now my step brothers and sisters, to moving into a little dorm room with a smelly, dirty girl who had dirty sheets, dirty clothes, n body oder that made me sick. We had to share a shower a kitchen and our living space. it was the worst experience of my life. After that i decided to live by myself moved to LA and furnished my apartment just the way I've always wanted to.

moral of story.. moving sucks until you find your home.
Party of 5!!!
written by Heather Carey, August 05, 2010
My most memorable living situation is actually the one I am currently in...........I live in Seattle in a chic urban neighborhood called Ballard in a tiny condo of 425 square feet. I bought this condo a little over six years ago and have lived alone with my 2 kitty cats up until January when my boyfriend moved in with me. Then, an impulse decision to get a black lab puppy turned us into a party of 5!!! My cats have moved into my closet and all my stilletto's and platforms have suffered. I had to totally rearrange my closet to accomodate my shoes being hung in those stacked shelves and reorganize my jeans, tops, dresses, skirts and handbags..........the two things that are secure in clothing or shoe bags are by black motorcycle leather jacket that I got at the 2009 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and my vintage Prada Platforms that my Mom got me in Europe...........though it is cramped and very cozy to say the least in our tiny condo. We make it work. I keep my clothes and prized possesions in my closet and away from the 7 month old Black Lab Puppy and a opposite work schedule keeps my boyfriend and I from killing each other every day..............

I had been moving almost all my life. Not from city to city but country to country. Iran, Germany, France, Spain, canada, US...am I missing any?! and no we were not in the military. I hated it at the time but now I look back and wish my own kids were exposed to as many cultures as I was. In each country I would speak the international language, you know the one that you speak slowly and a bit louder and use a lot of hand gestures, until I learned the language. he best was Madrid/Spain, loved it there. We lived in a tiny apartment with the friendliest people. ALways a smile on their face and very welcoming. I have to admit I hate moving now. I think I have done all the moving I could and I am done now.
My first own home
written by Parakeet, August 06, 2010
It must be my first own place, a small one room apartment. But very cosy and lovely. The first night was pretty scary, kept hearing every single little noise in the whole building, probably the whole block! Wonder if I slept at all. smilies/tongue.gif But after that I just loved it. To buy all my own furniture and decorate in crazy colours. Painted the bath room lime green and one wall was orange. Yep, I was all about bright colours! I had two bright red small tables, a blue sofa and so on. And because I lived right in the middle of the city my place was usually the perfect stop before and after partying, so there was always sth going on. Oh, those were the days!

The most memorable place I lived in was a two bedroom apartment that I moved into not long after graduating from college.

After I had already signed the lease with my best friend from college, my boyfriend at the time informed me that the big Victorian-looking house that I was going to be living in was originally a turn-of-the-century hospital that was supposedly haunted. Eep!

The lease started on August 1, which is when I moved in. My roommate wasn’t planning on moving in until the middle of the month. He did, however, move a few things in early with the help of his parents. His mother, upon seeing our apartment said, “You’re in the basement. This must have been where the morgue was.” Double eep!!! I think I slept with the lights on every night for those two weeks before my roommate officially moved in.

Adding to the creep factor, although not of the haunted variety, was the parking lot and back entrance. There was only one light in the entire parking lot, and it was in a far back corner, so most of the lot itself was dark. There was also a storage building that was right in front of the back door, making that area even MORE dark, making it an excellent spot for a Jack the Ripper wannabe to hide. We also had an unreliable hallway light that meant I went from a dark parking lot, to an even darker entryway, into a still darker hallway (in a haunted former hospital). *shiver*

Setting aside all of that, I’m glad I lived in that (potentially haunted) apartment, even if it was only for a few months. If I hadn’t lived there, I wouldn’t have been able to spend as much time with my boyfriend as I did before he left for Army basic training that October. Without that apartment, I would have been living 3 ½ hours away from him during that time. Considering it took nearly 5 years before we were living in the same time zone again, those two months were a real blessing. That boyfriend is now my fiancé, and we have shared an apartment for two years now (although he spent 6 months of that time away for training – this time for the National Guard).

I might not look back with fondness at my time living in a former hospital because those months were challenging ones for me, but I’m glad I lived there. It’s definitely a place I will never forget.

I can't forget my experience in London, where I pass my time with (I believed) an assigned Family (for a student program) that was not a family but a Single Person.
Mrs.Parker (75 years old) decided to welcome foreign students at her (big) house because she was widow and she felt so alone.
I've to say that when I discovered my "family" was an old woman I felt a little bit scared and embarassed.
I was really, really wrong.
The period I've passed in London was amazing, thanks to Mrs. Parker too.
She was so friendly! Every Morning she prepared a wonderful english breakfast for me with her hands!
She taught me how to improve my English and how to cook the perfect Pudding (I love cooking, so I was so Happy I had a true english cuisine teacher!)
She was an old english woman devoted to traditions! So I lived a very English/London Life, with the 5 o' clock tea, homemade butter biscuits, lots of chats about everyday life and her story.
When I wasn't at school or with friends I often went out with Mrs. Parker who was the best guide to discover London secret places (along with the well-known monuments and attractions).

I wrote to Mrs. Parker some letters when my time in London finished, but, unfortunately I lost contact with her time ago.
But memories of the wonderful period in London are still in my Heart.

The place where my wings were spread wide.

The awesomest place I lived in was in the mountains of New Hampshire. I lived in Europe for the most of my life and America was like a breath of fresh air. I was 20 at the time and left my fam 1st time ever and every day was so exciting. It was a 5 star hotel up in the mountains in the middle of nowhere and all the employees shared studio apartments in male/female dorms. My girlfriend and I had the most breathtaking view from our window. The hotel had a culinary apprenticeship program with Culinary Arts Institute of America and every meal we ate as if it was our last day on Earth. We had our ownemployee beach where we hang out during our leisure time, as well as hiking, biking, hitchhiking (since we had no car and fashion instincts were overwhelming). We were so fearless at the time mostly because everything was so new and we had no idea what to fear smilies/smiley.gif It was the best time of my life.

My favorite place---It was a tan duplex on a quiet street. It was small and had an even smaller kitchen. It was always freezing in the winter. It had such ugly cream carpet, and we had to walk through the bathroom to access another bedroom. (awkward) Not sounding so great, I know. There were many good things that made those horrible flaws fade into the background. My husband and I had a fantastic view of our whole town from our living room. All the lights would twinkle in the night. It was magical. We had friends over for many dinners, filled with laughs and sometimes drunken silliness. We had great neighbors. I got to have my own little garden. I found out I was pregnant in that house. My husband drove out on a very snowy night to get a pregnancy test. We sat and waited in that awkward bathroom for those 2 lines to appear. It was our first place that truly felt like home. Such great memories! xo
My current home

The most memorable place I have lived is the apartment I am currently living in. It is at the moment out for sale and though I can't wait to move on I know I will miss it. I live with my mother and sister in a small two bedroom apartment with a little garden outside. Our house is inspired by the fact that my mom is an artist who loves Beatles and nostalgia. We have like lots of guitars and violins hanging on the walls along with old grandpa clocks, old family photos, mom's paintings etc. The house is a big melting pot of antique furniture, industrial looking things etc. All the chairs in our home is in different colors and we have a "wall" that we got from a shop that is filled with shawls and bags. My sister and I share a room that is so small that the only thing that fit in is our bunk bed, but we have our own magical space: our closet! Filled with earrings in a row and lots of perfumes and shoeboxes it is my favorite spot in our home. Our garden is actually just a spot with grass and is filled with roses EVERYWHERE! I love this place even though we have the most narrow-minded and annoying neighbors and I know it will always have a special place in my "home-heart"smilies/smiley.gif
My house in Provence

My favorite home is my vacation house in Provence that I'm redecorating right now.
It has a beautiful swimming pool surrounded by vineyard and lavender fields.
The smell is amazing when all the lavender is collected (harvested? I'm not sure that's correct english).
I have few other houses in France but this one is my favorite cause my husband gave it to me.
I wish I could join a picture.

Moving is so super stressful. The most stressful move was when we drove separate cars over 1400 miles with an 8 month old and a 2 year old using walkie talkies to communicate between the 2 vehicles. No matter how many moves I've been through, I don't think I'll get use to it. Good luck with settling into your new place.

The most memorable place I've lived is our current home. This fall will be our third year in this house, which is our first home purchase. It feels nice not having to rent anymore and getting to make changes to the place without having to get permission. I've finally gotten off my bottom and got to painting. I've finished half of the house. It's exhausting so I think I will give it a break until next summer. I'm really enjoying making this house a home.
Beach Bonanza

One summer 6 of us girls lived in a beach house in Ocean City. In one room we had four beds lined up right smack next to each other so basically you could roll onto all four beds without stopping. Needless to say, when one girl had a boy over, there wasn't much privacysmilies/smiley.gif
