Continuing our series of exclusive interviews with amazing musicians here on FAN CLUB, I am pleased to share with you a charming chat I had with the delightful Caroline Brooks.
If you aren’t familiar with Caroline yet, just you wait. I predict that she’s going to be huge!
Her music is like a ray of sunshine, and her sweet and down-to-earth personality will definitely take her far.
Check out this incredible live performance of her new song “Can’t Have It All” from Hotel Cafe in Hollywood!
Love it! I hope you enjoy my interview with Caroline below :)
CARINA MENZIES: Hi Caroline! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today.
CAROLINE BROOKS: Thanks Carina!
CM: Let’s begin by having you tell us a little bit about yourself.
CB: I was born and raised in small-town Tyler, Texas and I've been singing and playing piano since I was 7 years old. I went to the University of Texas in Austin as a Radio-Television-Film major, and then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter. My sense of humor is a bit off-color and I wear my heart on my sleeve.
CM: I can totally relate to that! How would you say that you describe your music, Caroline?
CB: It’s quirky pop with a hint of blues.
CM: What are your favorite songs at the moment?
CB: Right now I’m loving "King of Anything" by Sara Bareilles, "Assassin" by John Mayer, and "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z & Alicia Keys.
CM: Have you always wanted to be a musician?
CB: Yes and no. Music has always been my passion, but I wanted to be an astronaut when I first started taking piano lessons. I remember selling lemonade to save money to go to space camp. Then I thought I wanted a career in politics. Years later, I woke up and realized that I was spending too much time planning my "Plan B" careers instead of mustering the courage to chase my real dream.
CM: I love that notion of chasing your real dream. Life’s too short not to!
CM: How would you describe your personal style, and what summer trends are you really liking right now?
CB: My personal style is relaxed but feminine. I'm in love with long t-shirt dresses... and blazers. I'd wear them with everything if I could.
CM: Blazers are just the perfect topper to pretty much every outfit, right? So Caroline, what is something that people would be surprised to know about you?
CB: I used to write my own secret comic series called "Ninja Woman" and had an unhealthy obsession with the Japanimation cartoon Sailor Moon. I think I had every episode recorded on VHS from last week... I mean uhh... Junior High. I used to hide it, but now I'm rather flamboyant with my dorky side.
CM: Amazing!
CM: How did you get your start in the music industry, and what advice do you have for others trying to break into a career in music?
CB: A friend heard some of my songs and introduced me to producer Chris Franz, who produced my first EP that was just released on iTunes. If I could give any advice to others trying to break into a music career, I'd encourage them to not be afraid of failure. If you fall 7 times, get up 8 times.
CM: Great words of wisdom. Who are your greatest musical inspirations?
CB: Paul Simon, Johnny Cash, Patty Griffin, Lyle Lovett, John Mayer, Ingrid
Michaelson, Colbie Caillat, Sara Bareilles, Elton John.
CM: What is your favorite makeup look, and are there Everyday Minerals any that you're excited to try?
CB: I usually like something fresh and subtle... I love shadowy eye shimmer. I was actually just checking out your Juniper eye shimmer, along with the Golden Medium Tan base and the Plum Dust matte cheek powder! I would love to get my hands on those.
CM: I think something can be arranged ;)

CM: Do you have any guilty pleasures, musical or otherwise?
CB: My guilty pleasures include Girl Scout cookies, Disney soundtracks, Cheez Its, and rugged, mysterious men.
CM: Haha - fantastic! If you had to choose, what is your one beauty essential?
CB: Mascara!
CM: All-time favorite song?
CB: Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" never gets old to me.
CM: Finally, Caroline, what's next for you?
CB: A nationwide tour and hopefully tour sponsorship. My goal is to expose and spread my music as much as possible. Also, if you follow me on Twitter (@carolinebrooks7), I'll be announcing within a week's time how to download my single "Can't Have It All" for free for a limited time only... so don't miss out!
Caroline was so lovely to speak to, and I think big things are definitely coming her way! :)
FUN TASK:
Taking a cue from Caroline’s self-described “flamboyant dorky side,” what is one dorky secret or nerdy thing that you love that you’ve that you’ve never told anyone about, until now?
5 of my favorites will received Caroline Brooks’ self-titled EP!

It is funny, it is kind of our little secret, whenever we have people come over they all think that I am the head chef in the kitchen and he is my sous chef
The only people that really know are our families

I can't believe I'm admitting this.
I guess my secret's sort of out anyway, given that I have a child with one. We have bookshelves full of books with titles like "Thermal Physics" that actually GET READ.
Oh, and I used to do Boolean Algebra problems. That might not sound too dorky, until I add that I used to enjoy doing them in my free time. For fun.
Am I a incurable case? :-D
