You know what they say... imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Today for PLAY, I’m focusing on ways that female musicians have paid tribute to other artists by covering their songs. It’s wild to think about how many covers there are in the musical world!
I want to share with you a few of my favorite covers of all time, starting with the legendary Sheryl Crow.
A super talented musician in her own right, I am enamoured with her version of Cat Stevens’ classic track “The First Cut Is The Deepest.”
The video is really beautiful too.
Going back a few years, this live performance by Aretha Franklin of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is so soulful and heartfelt :)
Then again, No Doubt’s cover of ‘80s band Talk Talk’s song “It’s My Life” always gets me and my kids moving!
They love dancing around to this one :)
Nelly Furtado’s cover of Gnarls Barkley’s huge smash hit “Crazy” is very delicate yet deeply emotional.
It gives the song a whole new spin!
On the topic of giving songs a whole new sound, you have to admit that Marie Digby’s pared down take on Rihanna’s massive song “Umbrella” is just as catchy.
Finally, on the guilty pleasure side, I will admit that Britney Spears’ performance of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards was one of her all-time best.
While Brit’s take is clearly sub-par to The Rolling Stones’ original, you have to admit, it’s fun to dance around to :)
FUN TASK:
What is your all-time favorite cover? Do you have a story behind why you’ve selected your pick?
I’ll send $25 iTunes gift cards to some of my favorites, so you can discover new remakes you might not even know existed :)

I had never heard her version before, but then one of my favorite Ice Dance teams, Navarro & Bommentre, chose to skate to it for their 2007-2008 Free Dance and it was a beautiful program.

That said--one of my absolute favorite covers is of one of the songs mentioned in your post, Rihanna's "Umbrella," but by Mandy Moore. I really had never been particularly impressed by the original song, because I tend to dismiss that genre of music out of hand. However, listening to this cover really made me listen to the words, which are actually quite wonderful. I think it's interesting how it sounds like a completely different song and genre. And I really love it!

Today I pick something, which is totally extraordinary. Have you ever heard Rihanna's song- Umbrella - in old school version? If not, I present you The Baseballs and their song- Umbrella!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URxzu8EFBVY
It is sooo great! Doesn't it make you wanna dance?
I love this because of unusual arrangement, great video and this Elvis style
The Baseballs is also very often in Poland :-) So we can listen and watch them live and it is additional pleasure :-) If you like The Baseballs' Umbrella you can check out their youtube.com channel, where you can find a lot of great covers

I also like Chasing Cars, Bleeding Love and POKER FACE!
It is avesome, how they mix 50's style with the contemporary music. I think, that this music is great for old-school styled parties. You can surprise your guests! I hope you like it!

It was nice to hear his beautiful style mixed with Melissa McClelland's voice to create a new version of this song. Sorry for the sketchy link, it's hard to find the right version:

And my second favorite, an Irish classic with a new twist:

I love the original, but I'm afraid that in this one instance I find Dylan's unique voice a bit of a distraction from the beauty of the lyrics and music. I adore Tori Amos, and her take on the song is very old-school, glamorous, almost Forties-esque. You can imagine being at a 40s ballroom dance, swaying in the gazebo outside, under a clear starlit sky while the band plays....beautiful.

My current favorite cover is by Sugarland. They recorded REM's "The One I Love" and made it sort of a duet. I love, love, loveit! REM's version is beautiful and haunting and totally a classic, but Sugarland does something special with this song. It's one of my "sing at the top of my lungs while in the car alone" songs and it really moves me, and the harmony is just killer!

I would choose Joe Cockers remake of the song 'with a little help from my friends'.
This was used in the opening theme of one my favorite shows the wonder years.
when i listen to this song i always think of this brilliant show.
I have watched this version on you tube and it is full of passion, he made the song his own through his performance.
it is a song with wonderful lyrics.
Do you need anybody
I just need someone to love
Could it be anybody
I want somebody to love.
Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

it was included on war child heroes, heres a little bit about it, its an album of all cover songs
War Child: Heroes’, released early 2009, was an unprecedented collaboration between music’s most heralded legends and the finest artists of the day.
We asked 15 ultimate icons to select a favourite song from their classic back catalogue and to nominate the new act they most trust to create a unique interpretation of that hand-picked track.
War Child protects children in the world's most dangerous war zones who have no-one else to turn to. They live in extreme poverty where conflict has not only destroyed the bricks and mortar of their homes and schools — but has also torn apart the social fabric of the families and communities which they depend on.
We believe it is unacceptable that children's lives continue to be torn apart by war. Yet many of the people who die in conflict are children. We're working hard to protect these children and helping them to build themselves a more secure future.

There are some songs that are so well done by an artist, especially an "original," that it is just risky to try to remake or "cover" it. Yet, sometimes there are some very wonderful surprises that are just as good or even better than an already great performance.
Since there are too many to choose from I decided to narrow down my selection by picking songs that were already huge hits, so well done that they would be hard to compete with. The original versions of these songs are die-hard favorites in their own merit. Doing this fun task made me realize that the 1960s was a great decade musically; and three of the songs I've chosen were originally recorded in 1967 and were major Billboard, R&B, and pop hits, as were the remaining ones.
As for the covers, I love how these artists brought their own flavor to each song instead of attempting a fatal copy-cat version. I'm also loving the blue-eyed soul remakes. Some of the songs are so completely rearranged and perfected that the updated versions blow the original fabulous hits away. The other reason I chose these songs is because the vocal quality and the emotional interpretation of these covers are spectacular.
Aretha Franklin is awesome and has so many great hits, including Natural Woman (1967 #8 Billboard) and Chain of Fools (1967 #1 R&B, #2 pop).
It's darn near impossible to top her versions, yet I still love Eva Cassidy's rendition of both of these songs. The arrangements are similar, but I love Eva's natural, not over-the-top, soulful delivery.

I also love Eva Cassidy's interpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Judy Garland 193
. I believe she greatly improved upon the song with her unique arrangement, and her voice is so very pleasing. Eva manages to sound soulful and sweet at the same time. She definitely made her cover of this song distinctive and current. Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Eva Cassidy)

Lady Tee performs a truly personalized, mind-blowing version of an otherwise unbeatable Linda Jones' Hypnotized (1967 #4 R&B, #21 pop). I can't say enough good about this lady's finely-tuned chops and musical artistry. Hear for yourself:

Of the profusely covered I'm Not In Love (orig. recorded by 10cc, 1975 #1 UK, #2 US), my favorite take on this song is by Will to Power. To me, it flows better than the others and is the most convincing.

I am pleasantly surprised by Queen Latifah's smooth, classy rendition of Barbara Lewis' (a favorite of mine) smash hit Hello Stranger (1963 #1 R&B, #3 pop).

HONORABLE MENTION:
I positively love all three of the following live covers of the poignant song I Who Have Nothing (orig. performed by Ben E. King in 1963).
Tom Jones' live performance of this song is fully passionate and strong and nothing short of breath-taking.
I Who Have Nothing (Tom Jones 1970 #14)

Shirley Bassey's execution of I Who Have Nothing is incredibly dramatic and mature and jaw-droppingly dynamic. It stands in a class all it's untouchable own.

Still, I love the freshness, youthfulness, and relevance that Jordin Spark's gives to her live cover of I Who Have Nothing while still keeping her performance stunning.

I'm a huge Tori Amos fan, and "Strange Little Girls", her album of covers is just amazing. I can't pick just one... so here's snippets of them all!
And not on this album, her version of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is just awesome.
Also, Dave Grohl's live cover of "Tiny Dancer" is funny and cool. Another notable mention: Gary Jules' hauntingly beautiful cover of Mad World by Tears for fears is brilliant.
