Behind the Scenes

  • Estet Beauty Expo in Kiev

Recently Everyday Minerals and Mineral Cosmetics were at a beauty expo in Kiev doing makeup lessons and touch-ups. Despite being in the middle of a war, it's important to remember that most just want to attempt to live as normally as possible, and our friends at Mineral Cosmetics help women do so! Here's a behind the scenes look at the event. Check out their website for more info.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I get to learn so many interesting things about natural ingredients, botanicals, and the biochemistry of hair and skin. Also I feel like it's a perfect thing for me because I am artist and creative but also love science, and my job is a fairly equal balance of the two!

What are the most challenging parts of your job?

I am limited in what ingredients I can use since we only use natural and plant or mineral derived ingredients, so it takes more creativity and research to make the products work as well as mainstream products.

    photo 3-1

What do you love about your city?

Austin is weird so I fit right in! And I love the weather here. Good combination of hip and progressive city life and warm weather that is hard to come by - San Francisco is too cold for me!

What event in your city do you look forward to every year?

The Texas VegFest. It's pretty new, I believe the one coming up this April will be the third one, but it is a lot of fun and there's so many awesome speakers and great vegan food.

    photo 1-1

What healthy living tips can you provide?

Find something active you enjoy and do that. Eat lots of fruits, veggies, beans, and omega-3 rich seeds! A balance in all things is really important for your mental health - but whatever a good balance looks like for you, it might not necessarily be 'moderation.'

What is your favorite food and restaurant?

I love the Concious Cravings trailer on South First. Their BBQ Seitan Wrap and rosemary fries are so good! I also love going to the new South Wheatsville for a Popcorn Tofu Po'boy and Capital City Bakery for the best vegan cupcakes in Austin. I am a vegan and there is certainly no shortage of great vegan food here! I've been vegan for 9 years, since I was 14 and a freshman in high school! So Everyday Minerals being a vegan company was definitely one of the things that appealed to me.

What's your favorite product to make and why?

The sugar scrub because it smells nice and looks pretty.

    photo 2-1

What are you most excited about right now?

In May I'm going to New York city to attend a one-day class on cosmetic preservation. I've never been to NYC and I'm very excited to learn things that will help me create inventive products.

What music are you listening to right now?

"Summertime Sadness" by Lana Del Ray

What is your favorite place that you've traveled/where do you want to travel?

When I was 13 I went to Yellowstone with my parents, and I loved seeing all the wildlife there. I am looking forward to going to NYC for the first time, and I hope to visit Europe and Australia some day.

What is the most challenging parts of your job?

The all natural route does make formulating some products more challenging but its way more rewarding when you finally get it.

  • Ingredient Spotlight: Bamboo Brushes

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 1.05.42 PM

What we put into our products is very important to our way of life, and we know that it's important to you too. So we're giving you some insider info on our how our products are made, where and how we get our materials, and how we are working together to keep the Earth a green and healthy place. We'll call this series our ingredient spotlight, so you can know what you're getting and where it's coming from. This week, we're going to focus on bamboo, used to create our award-winning makeup brushes.

Bamboo brushes are an effective way to provide a sustainable, inexpensive, quality product. Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant on earth. It is found in diverse climates that range from hot tropics to freezing mountains, and has an extremely versatile and short growing cycle. When the branches are cut, the underground system of the plant remains intact and the plant quickly sends up new shoots. Bamboo is harvested three to five times a year instead of the typical 20 to 50 years of its wood counterparts, making it completely sustainable!

All of our ingredients are purchased from small-scale producing groups. Carina travels worldwide, personally visiting suppliers to trace the ingredients, meet the growers, and ensure care for the environment and fair working conditions and wages.

Everyday Minerals is completely cruelty free, and all of our suppliers take the pledge as well. Learn more about our no-testing policy here. That adorable blue heron pictured above is part of our Wildlife Rescue project.

  • Winter Beauty Trend: "No Makeup" Makeup

    nomakeup1

We've always loved an effortless look at EM, and this season, so does everyone else. A super natural, no makeup look is suitable for anyone, anytime. It involves a perfect complexion, flesh toned blush and lips,  and light eye shadow (skip the liner!) We were recently on a fall fashion lookbook shoot with local Austin boutique, Beehive, and created this look with model Alaina. Check out the step-by-step below to achieve her fresh face!

Step 1: Moisturize! Perfectly hydrated skin is the must-do step to achieve a smooth, even foundation application. Start with a color corrector stick underneath the eye, follow with hydrating jojoba base and finish with a creme conceal stick to get rid of any lingering imperfections. Set with a light dusting of Sunlight Finishing Dust to add warmth.

Step 2: Choose a light neutral-toned blush like Snuggle and apply 2 finger's widths away from the nose and just below the cheekbone.

Step 3: Pair with a neutral toned lip, just one or two shades brighter than your natural lip color, like Nearly Nude or Can't Stop Grinning.

Step 4: Fill in your brow using short, stiff strokes, starting in the middle and working your way to the outside. Use a neutral toned shadow, like Freedom, all over the lid and on the lower lash line, and voila! Effortlessly perfected!

    nomakeup2

To take it up a level in intensity, try adding a brighter lip color as shown above, such as Blooming Mauve or Sweet Secret.

Oh, and don't forget to checkout Beehive Boutique's online store, they've got some amazing stuff!

  • Behind the Scenes: Artist Inspiration

    rina2

With the recent excitement of our new website launch buzzing all around us, we want to take this opportunity to show you the woman behind our new artwork, Rina Khadivi. That’s her above in her studio in East Austin.

As a female-owned brand that feels strongly about promoting the artistic development of all women, we were a perfect fit from the start. She’s a jack-of-all-trades, of the artistic sort. From graphic design and marketing, to murals, photography and painted portraits, her creative outlets are numerous, and we love it. When it comes to inspiration, she gets it from her surroundings.

    rina1

“The make up is fresh and light, therefore the art that it inspires me to create is fresh and light. I’m given a lot of artistic freedom, which really inspires me to explore different outlets of creativity.”

She’s always been a natural when it comes to artistic endeavors (see adorable picture below: that’s her hard at work, age 2.) But it wasn’t until an art history class about Pollock that it really hit.

    rinakid

“That’s when I thought, I want to do this for a living.”

The EM products that have Rina feeling the most inspired?

“I love Snooze Bar blush paired with Barely Nude Tinted Lip Butter. It’s the perfect barely-there nude look. I add in Blooming Mauve when I want a bit more color. The skin tints are great for warming up winter complexions, and the retractable brushes make holiday traveling so easy.”
